composer, musicologist and music educator, director of the Institute for Research on Music & Acoustics-IEMA.
Born in Athens, he studied musical theory and composition in Athens, conducting in Paris, electronic and computer music at the Music High School of Cologne, musicology at the University of Cologne and music phenomenology and conducting at the University of Mainz with S. Celibidache. He has also followed seminars with I. Xenakis, P. Boulez, St. Reich, M. Kagel, K. Stockhausen and J. Cage. Since 1989 he lives in Athens where he is co-founder and director of the Institute for Research on Music & Acoustics (IEMA) which is hosting the Greek Music Documentation and Information Centre.
As composer he has composed 60 pieces in several forms including music for the theatre, cinema, dance and music installations. He is a pioneer of computer music in Greece starting using the computers in music from 1978 for algorithmic composition and real-time interactive installation systems.
As educator he is a leader of music educational projects, mostly in the frame of the national project "MELINA-Education and Culture" where he has developed an innovative way of approach to music for the schools and compiled books and CD-ROMs for the public schools. He has teached music education and computer music in several seminars, schools and universities and now he is teaching "Music and Image" at the postgraduate level in High School of Fine Arts.
As researcher apart the creative and computer music researches, he was involved on many other research projects like Composers Work Catalogues, The reconstruction of Ancient Hydraulic Organ, Automated Systems of Music Coding and Retrieval, The Acoustics of Open Theatres, Distance Learning of Music, Interactive Music Installations, Digitization of Music and Digital Music Archives. He is currently leader of the projects "White Book - Specifications for the Digitization of Sound and Music" made for the national frame project "Information Society" and "Digitization and Promotion of the Greek Music Heritage and Civilization".
Member of the Central Committee of the "MELINA project" (Ministry of Education), the Music Council of Ministry of Culture, the Greek Council for the Digitization of Greek Heritage, the Hellenic Composers Union and the Greek Association of Electroacoustic Music Composers.
