Mazurka anthology 2.0 - available online

Registrations of nearly 60 mazurkas by Polish composers of the 19th and 20th centuries were included in the collection entitled ‘Mazurka anthology’ prepared by the pianist Łukasz Chrzęszczyk www.antologiamazurka.pl

The recordings, realized since 2020 as part of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage scholarship, present the development of the mazurka in Polish music from the times of Elsner and Kurpiński, by Fontana, Żeleński, Noskowski, Leszetycki, Paderewski, Stojowski, Michałowski to Friedman and Tansman.
The Mazurka Anthology is an extremely interesting collection for music lovers, performers and educators seeking exemplification of interesting performance problems.

Project is realized as part of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage scholarship.

Less than 100 days remain until the start of scores enrollment for the Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition in the Composition category. Composers will be able to submit their composition from the 1st of July until the 30th of September 2022.

The winning compositions will be included in the repertoire of the performance competition, published by Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne and recorded. Prize pool is € 27,000.

The works will be assessed in two stages. In the first stage the scores will be assessed by a selection committee composed of composers and performers. In the second stage a jury consisting of the Italian composer and organist Francesco Filidea (chair) Agata Zubel, Daniel Cichy, Dutch composer and poet Rozalie Hirs and Yann Robin from France will make the final selection of the submitted compositions.

The competition is open to artists from all over the world who are under 40 years of age. Works can be submitted in one of four disciplines: piano, violin (solo or with piano), voice (solo or with piano) or string quartet. Each participant can submit more than one piece, increasing their chances of winning. Works intended for voice may use text in any language chosen by the composer.

Applications for the competition may be submitted from the 1st of July to the 30th of September 2022 via the online recruitment form that will be launched on the website www.szymanowski-competition.com

University of Warsaw Library published collection of Szymanowski's works online

On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the death of Karol Szymanowski, the University of Warsaw Library, which boasts the largest collection of the composer's manuscripts and documents in Poland, makes their extensive selection available in the CRISPA digital library.

The first group of documents includes: 

- musical autographs of Szymanowski's works with opus numbers (105 musical manuscripts in various forms: score, piano excerpt, fair copy, draft, sketch, fragment),
- photographs of the composer - portraits and chronicles of his life (49 items),
- first editions of some of his compositions (27 items).

Karol Szymanowski's legacy was transferred to the University of Warsaw Library in 1961 and its survival is largely due to the tireless work of the musicologist Stanisław Golachowski, who during the Second World War undertook and pursued the intention of integrating and securing the composer's scattered material output: his manuscripts, memorabilia, and correspondence.

Cracow | Final Concert of the 2nd International Composition Competition ‘art and violence'

On the 1st of April 2022 at 5.30 p.m. at the final concert of the 2nd International Composition Competition ‘art and violence’ at the Decjusz Willa Cultural Institute in Cracow premiere of the two winning pieces performed by Spółdzielnia Muzyczna Contemporary Ensemble will take place.

The subject of the competition was a piece for a piano trio with a duration of up to 12 minutes referring to the Competition’s theme ‘art and violence. The jury composed of: Prof. Marcel Chyrzyński - chairman, Prof. Wojciech Ziemowit Zych and Prof. Maciej Jabłoński - appraised 27 scores from all over the world: Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Ireland, Poland, Russia, the United States, Sweden and Great Britain. Among them were works of Olgierd Juzal-Deprati (1st prize) and Tomasz Szczepanik (2nd prize).

We will hear the winning compositions Ci-sza by Juzal-Deprati for soprano saxophone, percussion and piano (2022) and Szczepanik's Inquietudine for alto flute, percussion and piano (2022). Pieces by Georges Aperghis, Giacinto Scelsi and Rachel C. Walker will also be performed at the concert.

Till the 31st of March only applications for the 51st ZKP Musicological Conference may be submitted

Board of Musicology Section of the Polish Composers’ Union announces 51st Musicological Conference ZKP taking place between the 13th and 15th of October 2022 in Katowice titled ‘Music and Expression’. Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice will be the host of the event. Application deadline is 31st of March 2022.

Conference “Music and Expression’ will be yet another chance to think of music as expressive art. Special guests of the event will be Karol Berger (Stanford University) and Krzysztof Guczalski (Jagiellonian University) who will give plenary lectures.

Organizers await proposals of papers up to 20 minutes long and short speeches up to 10 minutes long (presenting main research theses only). Application forms together with abstracts (up to 1500 signs with spaces) are to be submitted till the 31st of March to This email address is being protected from spambots. Cracow | Farewell to Krzysztof Penderecki

The ceremony of transferring Krzysztof Penderecki's ashes to his final resting place, combined with a farewell, will take place on the 29th of March 2022. Holy Mass in the church of Saints Peter and Paul will begin at 12 o’clock. Due to the small space of the temple it will be attended by the relatives and people invited by the composer's family, representatives of the state, local authorities, institutions and artistic circles, as well as musicians who will perform the works of an outstanding artist, honorary president of the Polish Composers' Union.

At 11.00 a funeral procession will begin which will pass through the streets of Cracow: from the Basilica of St. Florian, along the Royal Route through Floriańska Street, Main Market Square and Grodzka Street to the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. It will be an opportunity for all those willing to pay tribute in public and honor the memory of the Artist.

Opole | Laureates of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition

On the 29th and 30th of March 2022 at 7 p.m. award winners of the 18th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition - Aimi Kobayashi, Martín García García, Kyōhei Sorita and Alexander Gadjiev - will perform in the Opole Philharmonic together with the Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Przemysław Neumann.

Two evenings will be filled by music of Fryderyk Chopin; each of his two piano concertos (Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor and Piano Concerto no. 2 in F minor) will be performed twice by the artists.

Wrocław | 8th Edition of the Polish Duo Competition

Another edition of Polish Duo Competition associates as many as eight music academies. This year’s edition is organized by the Karol Lipiński Music Academy in Wrocław. Auditions for instrumental duets will take place between 25th and 26th of March while auditions for vocal duets between 27th and 28th of March. The event will be broadcasted online on YouTube AMKL.

The competition is aimed solely at students. The jury will comprise of experts from the most important music centres in Poland.

Promotion of Polish music plays a significant role in the Competition. In the previous editions of the Competition pieces by Fryderyk Chopin, Stanisław Moniuszko, Ludomir Różycki, Feliks Nowowiejski, Władysław Żeleński, Jan Gall and Zygmunt Noskowski (each year respectively) were to be performed by the vocal duets. In this year’s edition one of the obligatory pieces of the programme will be vocal compositions of Mieczysław Wajnberg.

As part of the event masterclasses for contestants will also take place, this year lead by Tobias Koch. Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as well as Lower Silesia Voivodeship Marshall and President of the city of Wrocław will be event’s patrons.

Applications of the candidates for the 47th edition of the Oskar Kolberg Award to be submitted till the 30th of March only!

Oskar Kolberg Award is the oldest and most important distinction in the traditional culture field in Poland awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The patron of the founded in 1974 award is Oskar Kolberg, Polish etnographer, folklorist and composer. This year’s applications of the candidates for the award can be submitted until the 30th of March 2022.

The award goes to artists working in the fields of folk fine arts and crafts, literature, singing, instrumental music and dance, as well as organizers of artistic events promoting folklore and folk art, animators, masters, scientists, researchers, documentalists who - like the patron of the award - collect and pass on knowledge about folk culture to future generations.

The competition is organized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and is coordinated by the National Institute of Music and Dance in cooperation with the Radom Village Museum and its branch - the Oskar Kolberg Museum in Przysucha.

The award is granted in seven categories. Honorary distinctions are awarded to institutions and organizations that have been particularly distinguished for the development and popularization of Polish folk art and folklore. The honorary title of the Ambassador of Traditional Culture will be awarded, a distinction for the local government official who in the last year particularly supported the development of traditional culture in his region.

Applications of the candidates for the award may be submitted by cultural and academic institutions (including universities and institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences), government administration, local government units and non-governmental organizations operating in the field of culture.
