Winners of Composition Competition for songs to words by Zbigniew Herbert announced!

9 compositions were submitted to the Composition Competition for songs to words by Zbigniew Herbert, all of which met the conditions specified in the Rules and Regulations. 2 prizes and 2 distinctions were awarded.

On the 19th of January, 2024, the Competition Jury, composed of: Prof. Jadwiga Rappe - chairman, Prof. Ryszard Minkiewicz, Anna Rocławska-Musiałczyk, MA and Kamil Cieślik, MA – secretary, decided to award the following prizes:

The 2nd prize ex aequo in the amount of PLN 750 (gross) each was awarded to Ms. Joanna Liwo for the song From the Technology of Tears (emblem: jamowygołąb58) and to Ms. Maria Trzpis for the song To the river (emblem: HRB1983).

Honorable mentions were given to Mr. Franciszek Rusek for the song Testament (emblem: cladonia3000) and to Ms. Malwina Wiaduch for the song Kołatka (emblem: Aglaisio12).

1st prize was not awarded.

Stephan Schulmeistrat is the new President of the International Association of Music Centres

Schulmeistat StephanThe International Association of Music Centres (IAMIC) has unanimously elected Stephan Schulmeistrat, Director of the German Music Information Centre, as its new President. He succeeds Diana Marsh (New Zealand), who had held the position since 2021. Schulmeistrat has been a member of the IAMIC Board since 2021 and took over the position of Vice President in 2022.

"I see it as a great honour and privilege to help shape our international community, in which we unite the rich and diverse musical life of our countries, in this special position. Together with the Board, I would like to further develop our network through innovative approaches in order to promote the cultural significance of music worldwide," says Schulmeistrat.

Cracow | 2nd International Piano Duo Competition "Duettissimo"

Department of Chamber Music at the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music invites you to the 2nd International Piano Duo Competition "Duettissimo", which will take place in Cracow on April 8-14, 2024. CORRECTION: participation in the competition must be registered no later than the 11th of FEBRUARY.

The aim of the Competition is to promote the piano duet and Polish music, improve the level of performance of music for this chamber ensemble, exchange experiences between the Competition participants and teachers and popularize works for piano duet.

The competition will be held in the following age categories:

    1. the sum of the ages of the duo members cannot exceed 42 years (as of 8/04/2024)

    2. the sum of the ages of the duo members cannot exceed 70 years (as of 8/04/2024).

The obligatory programme includes works by Polish composers for piano duet (excluding Variations on a Theme of Paganini by Witold Lutosławski).

Katowice | Melodrama of the new sounds

In his new Concerto for quarter-tone accordion and instrumental ensemble, the Vienna-based composer Grzegorz Pieniek opens the curtain to the world of completely new sounds. On the 4th of February, 2024 at NOSPR at 6.00 p.m. the work will be premiered by accordionist Eneasz Kubit and the New Music Orchestra conducted by Szymon Bywalec.

The concerto was commissioned four years ago, but due to specific difficulties, it will only be performed now. As the organizers emphasize, "Mainly because of a special instrument - a quarter-tone accordion, built specially for the occasion. In fact, in this situation we can say that what was created here was not a piece for an instrument, but... an instrument for a piece.

Zielona Góra | "Polish Music Scene": Krzysztof Komendarek-Tymendorf and Maciej Gański

"Polish Music Scene" is a unique program of the National Institute of Music and Dance, whose main goal is to promote Polish artists and native composers. Thanks to the programme, world-renowned Polish musicians: viola player Krzysztof Komendarek-Tymendorf and pianist Maciej Gański will perform at the Zielona Góra Philharmonic on the 3rd of February, 2024 at 7 p.m.

Programme consists of both original compositions for viola and piano, as well as those arranged for such a duo - works rarely on the concert programmes, by Henryk Szopowicz, Jan Astriab, Piotr Maszyński, Zygmunt Stojowski, Jan Michał Wieczorek, Stefan Bolesław Poradowski. The artists will also present Mieczyslaw Wajnberg's Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 28, and works arranged by Krzysztof Komendarek-Tymendorf himself: Witold Lutosławski's Lullaby for Anne-Sophie and Emil Młynarski's Mazurka in G Major, Op. 7.

Cracow | 16. Opera Rara

The 16th Opera Rara Festival will be held in Cracow on February 1-18, 2024, the programme of which will include the premiere of Aleksander Nowak's latest opera I, Şeküre and rarely performed masterpieces by old masters.

The opera I, Şeküre is inspired by the plots of the great novel My Name is Red by the Turkish Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk. The libretto was created by the composer himself. At the Juliusz Słowacki Theater in Cracow, the work will be premiered by soloists, the Polish Radio Choir and musicians of the Music Cooperative contemporary ensemble and Capella Cracoviensis. The sounds of new music will be combined with a video installation by Marcin Chlanda and Jakub Kotynia. By the way, Orhan Pamuk was present during the concert performance of fragments of the opera last year in Poznań.

Solaris by Karol Nepelski based on the novel by Stanisław Lem will inaugurate the Festival at the National Synchrotron Radiation Center SOLARIS. The performance is a co-production of the Opera Rara festival and the H. Modrzejewska Old Theater., the music cooperative Hashtag Ensemble (which will take part in the performance of the piece) and the Warsaw Stage Society. The event's partners are the Jagiellonian University and the Contemporary Music Space Hashtag Lab.

2nd Composition Competition for a school miniature

Fryderyk Chopin Music School Complex in Piła announces the 2nd Composition Competition for a school miniature. Any student of a second-degree music school in Poland can take part in the competition. Students with the status of students of music universities are excluded from participating. The deadline for submitting applications is the 30th of April, 2024.

The subject of the competition is a piece composed in any style for 2 to 4 performers, selected from the following instruments: violin, clarinet, trombone, piano. Unconventional ways of extracting sound are allowed in the composition, including the preparation of the instrument (as long as it does not pose a risk of damaging the instrument). Works that have not been previously published, recorded or awarded in other composition competitions may be submitted. One participant may submit a maximum of two works.

„Polish Impressions" - newest CD release of the Łomża Philharmonic

The latest album of the Witold Lutosławski Chamber Philharmonic in Łomża, titled Polish Impressions, is the orchestra's 18th album and contains three phonographic premieres. It was recorded together with recognized Polish soloists: accordionist Klaudiusz Baran, flutist Jadwiga Kotnowska, clarinetist Artur Pachlewski, cellist Karolina Jaroszewska and violinist and composer Mateusz Smoczyński. The album was released by the DUX record company, and thanks to the cooperation with NAXOS, it will be available worldwide.

All compositions were created as part of the "Composer's Commissions" programme implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance, while the first two were commissioned by the Łomża Philharmonic.

Henryk Mikołaj Górecki Silesian Philharmonic invites fans of film music to a concert on the 28th of January, 2024 at 5 p.m. as part of the "PGE HoloGramy" series. The background for the event will be an amazing hologram setting, which, combined with music by Polish artists, will provide an unforgettable experience.

The programme will include soundtracks from such productions as Polskie Drogi (music by Andrzej Kurylewicz), Vabank (Henryk Kuźniak), Alternatywy 4 and Janosik (Jerzy Matuszkiewicz), 07 zgłoś się (Włodzimierz Korcz), Czterej pancerni i pies (Adam Walaciński), Wojna domowa (Janusz Mych), as well as Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones and others.

The Silesian Chamber Orchestra will be conducted by Radosław Droń, and we will hear the drummer Krzysztof Nowakowski as a soloist.
