Polish Musicological Yearbook

was initiated by Adolf Chybiński in 1935. Unfortunately, only two volumes were then issued (the second one in 1936). After nearly 70 years, in 2004, Musicological Section of the Polish Composers‘ Union came back to that project and published the third issue, dedicated to two founders of Polish musicology: professors Zdzisław Jachimecki and Adolf Chybiński.

The Yearbook represent the whole spectrum of Polish scholars’ activity, including proceedings of musicological conferences organised by the Polish Composers‘ Union. It contans papers in two languages: Polish and English.

Both the current volume and the past issues published since 2011 are avaialble online at the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) licence and can be read as pdf files in "ALL ISSUES" menu.

Since 2016, thanks to efficient co-operation with Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne — PWM Edition — the main and prestigious music publisher in Poland, apart from the internet version the Yearbook has gain its printed version too.

The Patron of the „Polski Rocznik Muzykologiczny” — “Polish Musicological Yearbook” is the Society of Authors ZAiKS.

Łagów Lubuski | 48th Polish Composers' Union Musicological Conference "Borders of Freedom"

ZKP

The 48th Musicological Conference of the Polish Composers' Union "Borders of Freedom" will take place on 5-7 September 2019 in Łagów Lubuski ("Leśnik" Recreation Centre, 10 Bolesława Chrobrego St.).

The infamous congress of composers and music critics in Łagów Lubuski, during which representatives of the power apparatus imposed the socialist realism doctrine on Polish artists, took place in 1949. It was not the first meeting of the communist authorities with the artists' circles: earlier there were conventions of writers (in Szczecin), artists (in Nieborów), theater people (in Obory) and architects (in Warsaw). The Łagów events received wide coverage among Polish composers and musicologists. The reactions varied, ranging from moral dilemmas related to attempts to adapt to the new situation to dramatic decisions about emigration.

After 70 years, it is worth returning to Łagów – the place where you can still hear the faint echoes of the events of 1949, to think about matters related to the relationship between music and power, music and freedom, abstract form and mimetic content of the art of sounds. In this historic place, scholars will discuss problems regarding the borders of freedom in music. The presentations will concern both detailed issues related to the consequences of socialist realist pressure or the Cold War division of Europe, as well as much wider dimensions of the relationship between artistic freedom and its conditions in the context of the entire history of music.

The organizers of the event are: Musicologists' Section of the Polish Composers' Union; Branch Office of Historical Research, Institute of National Remembrance in Poznań; Institute of Music of the University of Zielona Góra. The conferene's partner is ZAiKS Association of Authors.

Mapa Polskich Kompozytorów – projekt multimedialny Instytutu Adama Mickiewicza

Strona http://mapofcomposers.pl/ – dostępna w polskiej i angielskiej wersji językowej – prezentuje sylwetki uznanych rodzimych twórców muzyki XX i XXI wieku. Mapa sytuując kompozytorów w kontekście czytelnie zdefiniowanych nurtów kultury ukazuje wzajemne wpływy, inspiracje i zależności zachodzące pomiędzy nimi.

International Stanisław Moniuszko Composers’ Competition for a Micro-Opera Entitled "12 Minutes for Moniuszko"

ZKP

In connection with the year 2019 having been declared the “Year of Stanisław Moniuszko” by an act of the Polish Parliament, the Polish Composers’ Union and Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera hereby announce the International Stanisław Moniuszko Composers’ Competition for a micro-opera.

Moniuszko’s stage works take up many issues concerning the society and everyday life, as well as referring to contemporary events important for Poles. They combine drama with comic elements. They offer high-quality entertainment without compromising the aesthetic qualities. They wonderfully reflect the emotional states of the dramatic figures and the specific mood of each situation. They make excellent use of character interactions and of dramatic motives typical of the theatre, aptly represented by Moniuszko in music – through melody, instrumentation, and other musical components. The competition aims to achieve the same aims in our own times, using the adequate contemporary artistic tools. We want to revive, in present-day conditions, the specific idea of Moniuszko’s operas as musical dramas based on social topics.

The competition may be entered by music composers of all nationalities and without an age limit. Entering the Competition is free of charge. The entry submitted to the Competition should be sent only electronically by the end of 31st July 2019. The Competition consists of two Stages: in Stage One, maximum six Works will be selected to be staged in the Emil Młynarski Chamber Music Hall of Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw; in Stage Two, the Works selected for production will be publicly performed during one Night of World Premieres on 14th December 2019, after which the winners of the Competition will be chosen.

The winner of the Competition shall receive a Grand Prix amounting to 40,000 PLN and the title of Winner of the Competition. The other composers of works staged during the Night of World Premieres shall receive Prizes amounting to 20,000 PLN each and the title of Prizewinner. Independently of the prizes listed above, the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera Audience Award, amounting to 10,000 PLN, shall be presented, accompanied by the title of Audience Award Winner.
