A special concert "Professor Mieczysław Nowakowski in memoriam" on the occasion of the Feliks Nowowiejski Year

svThe Finding of the Holy Cross – Feliks Nowowiejski’s monumental oratorio will be performed at a special “Professor Mieczysław Nowakowski in memoriam” concert on the occasion of the Feliks Nowowiejski Year. The event will take place on November 24, 2017 at 8 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw.

Considered by critics to be Feliks Nowowiejski’s finest oratorio, The Finding of the Holy Cross (Kreuzauffindung) has not been performed very frequently. Even though the work’s first performance in Lviv in 1906 was a great success, the winds of history prevented it from becoming a staple of the Polish oratorio repertoire. Luckily, Nowowiejski’s output has become better appreciated in recent years. This has resulted in a growing number of concerts and recordings of works written by this exceptional composer, who was also a conductor, teacher, the pope’s chamberlain and virtuoso organist.

The Warsaw premiere of the work will take place thanks to the persistent efforts of Professor Mieczysław Nowakowski. This eminent conductor died in February of 2017. For a very long time he hoped to conduct his favourite oratorio to conclude his career in Warsaw. Professor Nowakowski not only had ties with Poland’s capital as a conductor, where he directed more than 1200 performances in the Teatr Wielki – the National Opera, but he was also a professor at the Warsaw Academy of Music. The performance of The Finding of the Holy Cross in the basilica in which Professor Nowakowski’s funeral ceremony was held eight months earlier thus acquires a new, symbolic meaning.

The Finding of the Holy Cross tells the story of St. Helena and her mission to find the true cross on which Jesus died. According to legend, on the eve of a battle emperor Constantine the Great saw a luminous cross in the sky, surrounded by the inscription “In hoc signo vinces” (In this sign thou shalt conquer). After a miraculous victory, the ruler promised to build a temple on the site of Christ’s crucifixion. This task was undertaken by the emperor’s mother Helena. Nowowiejski’s oratorio in three scenes shows her pilgrimage, her struggle with pagan cults in Jerusalem and her laborious search for holy relics. St. Helena will be sung by Ewa Biegas, while Macarius, bishop of Jerusalem will be sung by Krzysztof Szumański. The Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra will be accompanied by the National Philharmonic Choir, directed by Bartosz Michałowski. A monumental cast of 160 performers will be conducted by Sebastian Perłowski.

Admission to the concert is free. The event is organised by the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra and the Institute of Music and Dance and is co-funded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage under the project “Nowowiejski 2017”, realized by the Institute of Music and Dance. Honorary sponsor: Kazimierz Cardinal Nycz, Archbishop of Warsaw.

The concert will be broadcast online at http://www.sinfoniavarsovia.org/pl/.

BASSO 2. Biennale of Low Tones: "BASSO in the underground" and "AUKSO with basses"

b

BASSO 2. Biennale of Low Tones will take place in Warsaw and will last until November 30, 2017.

BASSO is a unique biennial, mainly due to its originality and pioneering character in Poland. The idea of the event is to go beyond the framework of the classical festival of classical music. The core of the programme is music for bass instruments, with particular emphasis on cello, viola da gamba and double bass, as well as brass and electronic instruments (tuba, bassoon, bass guitar) and folk instruments (basses). The name of the event refers to the baroque practice of basso continuo, i.e. a system of partially improvised accompaniment played on a bass line.

On November 26 at the Podziemie Kamedulskie singer Justyna Piernik and her father, tubist Zdzisław Piernik will perform music from Kuyavia region. "The Taming of the Shrew" from the Bolshoi Theatre

bAn innovative ballet interpretation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew will be broadcast live from the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow at the Praha Cinema in Warsaw on November 26, 2017.

Rather than a macho handbook, The Taming of the Shrew can be construed as an encounter between two forces of nature, who recognise one another at last. If they are abrupt, obnoxious, it stems from their solitude; they are fundamentally different from the society they live in, albatrosses among sparrows, and their excesses signal that they have yet to find a man (or a woman) who can measure up to them. Their love is out of the ordinary: while Petruchio could appear to be interested only in Baptista’s fortune, once the ink is dry on their marriage certificate, he doesn’t let go of Katharina. If he is interested, it’s by this woman; the real dowry, the actual gold mine, it’s her. He still needs to put her through a series of challenges to make sure that he wasn’t mistaken, that they are right for each other — measure for measure, so to speak. He was right. So was she. If she gives in to her husband’s demands, it’s not because she has found her master, but because she has met her match. Her submissiveness is an act. It hardly matters whether or not the sun is the moon, because the two of them have their own, extra-ordinary light. Petruchio isn’t fooled by by his wife’s new attitude. For the outside world, however, the prevalent social norms are safe. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief: even the most reluctant among them have complied. In truth, Katharina and Petruchio play their parts in perfect harmony, and their singular tune sets them apart in what is a game of artifice.

Malcolm is the result of composer's experience gained during his stay in Poland. It will be perdormed by the composer and pianist Kyeong-Yeon Seo.

Three women for three women and 10 instruments (2017) by Agnieszka Stulgińska is a piece about feminity, motherhood, difficult life, travelling, space, longing, intimacy, power and generations – all the things that cannot be included in the limited space and notation... A starting point for searching for the timbre was the Polish-Belarusian boarderland where composer's father was born, and a voice of an old woman, the earth. The composition will be premiered by the well-known vocalists Maniucha Bikont and Marta Grzywacz, as well as Hashtag Ensemble.

Haydn. The Day Trilogy | Berenice

siPolish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra will perform Joseph Haydn's "The Day Trilogy" symphonies and Scena di Berenice with Olga Pasiecznik on December 15th, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at the Great Hall of the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

Three symphonies devoted to different time periods – times of day – are an interesting curiosity in Haydn's legacy. There are some mentions that there were supposed to be four works, but if “Night” was one of them, it has not survived and today the cycle consists of three: Morning, Noon and Evening, annotated in the scores with French titles. It was probably created around 1761, shortly after the great composer took up the post of the vice-band leader of the ensemble of Prince Pál Esterházy. These charming Rococo works are evidence of the intensive search for a new expression of the hitherto simple sinfonia of Baroque provenance and its transformation into a mature, classic symphony.

During his second visit to London in 1795, Haydn wrote the dramatic scene Berenice, che fai for Italian singer Brigida Banti, using the expressive text from Pietro Metasiasio’s Antigono. In the work, Berenice mourns the (alleged) suicidal death of her beloved Demetrio. The role of the emotion-torn Berenice will be sung by one of the most acclaimed singers, Olga Pasiecznik from Ukraine, who has been living in Poland for years. Pasiecznik is adored by audiences for many unforgettable opera and oratorial roles, as well as her wonderful song repertoire. The concert will be led by Gabriel Chmura.

Concerts of Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra are organised under Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC patronage.
