Łódź | 6th AŻ Festival

AM Lodz

The Academy of Music in Łódź invites you to the sixth edition of the AŻ Festival. The programme of eight concerts will be dominated by two topics: Polish music and games of imagination. Inauguration of the Festival – November 17, 2018.

The inauguration concert will feature works by Krzysztof Penderecki, Krzysztof Olczak and composers associated with Łódź: Olga Hans, Sławomir Kaczorowski and Maciej Kabza. During the final concert, which will take place on December 1, we will hear Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 17 by Ignacy Jan Paderewski with an outstanding soloist Kevin Kenner, Exodus by Wojciech Kilar and Radogoszcz dramatic overture by Antoni Szewczyk. The Concert of Polish Music on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence will take place on November 27 and will be filled with works by Stanisław Moniuszko, Karol Mikuli, Mieczysław Karłowicz and Grażyna Bacewicz in the interpretation of the Academy's pedagogues, including university's rectors – professors Cezary Sanecki (piano) and Beata Zawadzka-Kłos (soprano). The programme of the next five evenings will cover Polish film music (Wojciech Lemański, Krzesimir Dębski), percussion (Anders Åstrand, Lawrence Ugwu, The Bacewicz Percussion Ensemble) and choir music.

All concerts of the 6th AŻ Festival begin at 6.00 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Music Academy (2a Żubardzka Street), tickets for 30 PLN and 20 PLN to be purchased at the AM ticket office.

Warsaw | Symphonic concert "Masters of instrumental studies"

A concert of Polish music on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence will take place on November 14, 2018 at 7.00 p.m. at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music as part of the cycle "Wednesday on Okólnik Street".

The Symphony Orchestra of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music will perform under the baton of Maestro Wojciech Rodek. The programme of the concert will include Overture "Leszek the White"  by Józef Elsner, Symphonic poem "Eternal Songs", Op. 10 by Mieczysław Karłowicz and Polish Fantasy for piano and orchestra by Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Karol Radziwonowicz will perform as a soloist.

Tickets for PLN 15 are available at the Chopin University Press (2 Okólnik St., Warsaw).

Katowice | Alexander Liebreich and Szymon Nehring at NOSPR

NOSPR

Szymon Nehring, an acclaimed Polish pianist of the young generation, and the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Liebreich will perform on November 15, 2018 at 7.30 p.n. at the NOSPR headquarters in Katowice.

This is another meeting of NOSPR and Szymon Nehring, after a well-received concert at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The concert will open with the overture to Halka – the first opera by Stanisław Moniuszko, which gained wide recognition already during the composer's lifetime. Szymon Nehring will perform as a soloist in Ignacy Jan Paderewski's late-Romantic virtuoso Piano Concerto in A minor. The last piece of the evening will be Symphony No. 1 by Johannes Brahms.

The artists will present the same program two days later in Vienna.

Polish music for children in the sounds of clarinet and piano

In December 2018 and March 2019, The PianoClassic Art Association invites you to concerts as part of the project "Polish music for children in the sounds of clarinet and piano".

The project of clarinetist Barbara Borowicz and pianist Anna Miernik "Polish music for children in the sounds of clarinet and piano" is realized by the Krakow Artistic Association PianoClassic in cooperation with the Life & Art Foundation. Both artists are involved in the promotion of Polish music in the country and abroad. The purpose of their latest project is to familiarize students of first-level music schools with chamber music by Polish composers.

The event will take place in December 2018 and in March 2019 at music schools in Domosławice (04/12/18), Korzenna (06/12/18), Lubaczów (11/12/18), Skawina (March 2019) and Wadowice (March 2019).

The programme includes interpretative courses for students, a lecture about Polish music with particular emphasis on the role of clarinet and piano, clarinet exhibition with accessories and a lecture on the subject of clarinet maintenance conducted by Tomasz Cyzowski from the renowned Piotr Śmietana Brass Instruments Service. The finale of each day of the project in a given school is a concert of Polish music performed by the organisers.

Warsaw | Concert of The FCUM Brass and Woodwind Band

On November 28, 2018 at 7.00 p.m., there will be a concert of the FCUM Brass and Woodwind Band as part of the cycle "Wednesday on Okólnik Street".

The programme of the musical evening in the Concert Hall of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music will include: Clarinet Concert in B flat major by Karol Kurpiński, Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare by Richard Strauss, Petite symphonie, Op. 90 by Charles Gounod, Memorial to Lidice by Bohuslav Martinu, Polonaise for Friends by Maciej Małecki, Suite Française by Darius Milhaud, and Two-Bone Concerto for two trombones and orchestra by Johan de Meij.

Maciej Małecki's work was commissioned by the United States Air Force Orchestra in Europe and combines two national anthems: Poland and the United States. This stylistic treatment is a symbol of friendship between the two countries. Placing the work in the program of the Wednesday concert has a special dimension, as the Orchestra will be led by the American conductor Robert W. Rumbelow – the first conductor of the university band.

Polish Composers' Union invites you to the 28th Composers' Portraits. The concerts dedicated to the works of Aleksandra Garbal and Monika Kędziora will take place on December 11-12, 2018 at 6.00 p.m. in the concert hall of the PWM Edition in Warsaw (8 Fredry St.).

On December 11, excerpts from the opera Polonica Rustica by Aleksandra Garbal will be presented. This is a chamber opera for 7 soloists (soprano, alt, tenor, baritone, violin, cello and piano) in the national style, which combines tradition and modernity. Instrumental parts are treated vocally and subjectively, combining folklore, religious and patriotic elements..

On December 12, Sepia Ensemble will perform compositions by Monika Kędziora: The Blind Sleepwalker's Prayer for soprano solo to words of Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, 7 miniatures for solo piano micro-nano-mos, Plaudens for solo flute, cres-cere for clarinet, cello and piano and Mulceo for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano.

The Phasma-Music Foundation and the Castle Museum in Kwidzyn invite you to a festive concert entitled "Kwidzyn classically for Independence", which will take place on November 23, 2018 at the Kwidzyn Castle at 7:00 p.m.

Flautist Iwona Glinka and harpist Agnieszka Kaczmarek-Bialic will will perform works by Fryderyk Chopin, Michał Kleofas Ogiński, Maciej Małecki and Witold Lutosławski. In addition, there will be two premieres: Trilogy by Michail Travlos and BallaDo – BallaRe by Ewa Fabiańska-Jelińska. The latter work was written especially for the concert as part of the ministerial programme "Composing Commissions", implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance. Admission free.

Elbląg | New Year with Cello Phenomenon

On January 12, 2019 at 7:00 p.m., the State Music School Complex in Elbląg will host a New Year's concert of the Elbląg Chamber Orchestra and its guests.

Marcin Zdunik, who dominated the 6th International Witold Lutosławski Cello Competition by winning the first prize, the Grand Prix title and nine other prizes, will perform as soloist along with Karolina Nowotczyńska, concertmaster of the EOK. The orchestra will be led by Marek Moś. The programme will include: Fantasy for cello and orchestra, Op. 52 by Mieczysław Wajnberg,recorded by Marcin Zdunik and the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante KV 364 (arr. for violin, cello and string orchestra) and Adagio and Fugue in C minor KV 546 (arr. for string orchestra), as well as Wojciech Kilar's Orawa.

The concert is organised under the patronage of the PWM Edition as part of the TUTTI.pl project promoting performances of Polish music.

Mrozy | Concert of the Melanidis Chamber Orchestra

The sixth concert of the cycle "Mazovian Musical Meetings without Barriers" will take place on November 25, 2018 at 3.00 p.m. at the Communal Cultural Center in Mrozy.

The concert will feature Melanidis Chamber Orchestra, composed of graduates of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. High technical skills of instrumentalists, developed during several years of education under the supervision of the best professors, combined with the emotional commitment characteristic of young orchestras, form a group of excellent musicians, characterized by flexibility and openness to a variety of styles.

The program of the November concert will include the beautiful baroque music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi, as well as the Serenade for string orchestra, Op. 2 by Mieczysław Karłowicz. The violinists Maksymilian Grzesiak and Katarzyna Boniecka will perform as soloists.

The project is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund. Admission free!

"My Polish Reflection" by Anna Miernik

The premiere of the latest album of pianist Anna Miernik My Polish Reflection will take place on December 10, 2018.

My Polish Reflection is an album presenting the kaleidoscope of Polish piano music: from Chopin's works, through Paderewski, Szymanowski, and Tansman, up to Michał Papara's composition, written especially for the album. Pianist Anna Miernik continues her artistic mission, which is the promotion of Polish music. Her repertoire includes dozens of works by Polish composers.

The project is carried out by the Krakow Artistic Association PianoClassic (www.pianoclassic.pl), dealing with the organization of cultural projects in the country and abroad. The CD has been co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund under the "Musical Track" programme, implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance. The recording is released by the record label DUX.

The album will be available from December 10, 2018 in music stores, as well as on the artist's website www.annamiernik.com.

Results of the 4th edition of Polish Music Critics Competition "Kropka"

From among nearly 200 applications, the jury of the 4th Polish Music Critics Competition "Kropka", organized by the Meakultura Foundation, selected winners in four categories.

Grand Prix, funded by the Institute of Music and Dance, went to Rafał Wawrzyńczyk for the text Ciemne centrum (dwutygodnik.com). The Main Prize in the article / column category was given to Aleksander Przybylski for the text Melotypy ("Ruch Muzyczny"), and in the category of review / report –  to Karolina Dąbek for the text Trans jesieni – zmierzch awangardy. Warszawska Jesień 2017 ("Glissando"). The founder of the Main Prize in both categories is the Society of Authors ZAiKS. The honorable mention for the debut, funded by PWM Edition, was given to Przemysław Górecki for the unpublished text Posłuchajmy, co tak gra. Sześć razy Maryla Rodowicz. Dirk Wieschollek received the Special Award for foreign critics for the text Ego-Shooter mit Achillesferse ("Dissonance") devoted to the work of Jagoda Szmytka. The founder of the Special Prize is the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

The Special Prize of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute was awarded to Adam Wiedemann for the text Zachód słońca (dwutygodnik.com). Piotr Metz's Individual Award went to Olga Drenda for the text The Future Sound of Poland (text accompanying the exhibition "140 beats per minute" at the Museum of Modern Art).

"Don Quixote" ballet from Bolshoi Theatre at cinemas in Poland

Don KichotDon Quixote, one of the most popular comic ballets performed by the Bolshoi Theater group, will be screened at nearly 40 cinemas in November, December and January. At Warsaw's Kino Praha cinema, the retransmission will take place on December 2, 2019 at 4.00 pm.

„Lunares tempora” or contemporary comsic music

The Polish Society for Contemporary Music invites you on December 3 and 4, 2018 to Rzeszów and Łańcut for concerts "Contemporary music is cosmic", during which the premiere of Aldona Nawrocka Lunares tempora for trumpet and piano will take place.

The composer is an assistant professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music and the head of the Composition, Instrumentation and Score Reading Workshop. She is a member of ZKP, ZAiKS, the Phonographic Academy and WOPR. Her latest work was written as part of the programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Composing Commisssions", implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance.

The events will consist of two parts: the concerts will be preceded by lectures presenting the specificity of 20th and 21st century music from the perspective of new compositional trends, techniques, contemporary articulation, score notation and formal relations. The composer will lead them together with the performers on December 3 at the Faculty of Music of the Rzeszów University and on December 4 at the Teodor Leszetycki Music School in Łańcut.

Aldona Nawrocka's composition as well as Dela Staigers' Carnival of Venice will be performed by valued chamber musicians: trumpeter Tomasz Woźniak and pianist Maria Gabryś-Heyke. Admission free!

Szczecin | Conference "In white and black. Piano music at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries"

A scientific conference "In white and black. Piano music at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries" will take place at the Art Academy in Szczecin on December 6-7, 2018.

The aim of the project is to analyze issues related to piano music at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The core of the theoretical part will be lectures by contemporary Polish composers and outstanding performers of new music as well as concerts presenting practical aspects of discussed issues. The intention of the undertaking is to create a platform for artistic and scientific dialogue between the Academy of Arts and other artistic and scientific centers in Poland, enabling the exchange of views between artists, performers, theoreticians and all those interested in contemporary music issues.

The invitation to participate in the conference was accepted by: prof. Sławomir Czarnecki (University of Casimir the Great in Bydgoszcz), dr hab. prof. AM Magdalena Lisak (Academy of Music in Katowice), dr hab. prof. AM Artur Kroschel (Academy of Music in Poznań), dr Anna Ignatowicz-Glińska (Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw), dr Katarzyna Kwiecień-Długosz (University of Zielona Góra), dr Aldona Nawrocka-Woźniak (Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw) and dr hab . Warsaw | Gala of the 4th Polish Music Critics Competition "Kropka"

The Award Gala of the 4th Edition of the Polish Music Critics Competition "Kropka" will take place on December 5, 2018 at 5.00 pm at the Warsaw headquarters of the PWM Edition.

Established and organized by the Meakultura Foundation, the Competition of Polish Music Critics "Kropka" took place for the fourth time. The jury of this year's edition: dr. Daniel Cichy (Chairman), dr hab. Joanna Maleszyńska, dr Anna Ignatowicz-Glińska, Agata Kwiecińska, dr hab. Mirosław Pęczak, Rafał Księżyk, Remigiusz Mazur-Hanaj, read over 200 texts about music published last year, both in industry magazines, as well as on music portals or blogs. The jury selected the winners in four competition categories. The authors also receive an award funded by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute and the Individual Award of Piotr Metz.

The Competition winners are: Rafał Wawrzyńczyk, Aleksander Przybylski, Karolina Dąbek, Przemysław Górecki, Dirk Wieschollek, Adam Wiedemann and Olga Drenda.

The Main Co-organiser of the Competition and the Founder of the Grand Prix is ​​the Institute of Music and Dance. The competition has also received support from the ZAIKS Association of Artists.
