Jan Antoni Wichrowski,

composer and teacher; b. 19th June 1942 in Lviv; d. 2nd August 2017 in Wrocław. In 1969-72 he studied composition with Stefan Bolesław Poradowski and Ryszard Bukowski at the State Higher School of Music in Wrocław.

He received many awards and honourable mentions at composition competitions, including an honourable mention for Dialogues for piano and symphony orchestra at the Young Composers' Competition of the Polish Composers' Union in Warsaw (1974), the 2nd prize for Music for piano and symphony orchestra at the National Composers' Competition on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Polish People's Republic (1974), the 2nd prize for Songs for baritone, flute, violin, viola and cello to words by Stanisław Ryszard Dobrowolski at the ZAiKS Composers' Competition (1987), the 1st prize for Elegy about a Polish boy for mixed choir to words by Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński at the ZAiKS Composers' Competition on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of regaining independence (1989), the 3rd prize for Kisses for voice and piano to words by Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska and an honourable mention for Rubajata for cello and reciter at the 4th Karol Szymanowski Composition Competition (1992), an honourable mention for Sonata for violin and piano at the Grażyna Bacewicz Composition Competition (1993). In 1995, the film Marc Chagall directed by Aniela Lubieniecka with the composer's music was awarded the Grand Prix at the "Krok" International Animated Film Festival in Kiev.

Jan Antoni Wichrowski started teaching composition at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław in 1968, obtaining subsequent academic degrees. In 1993-1996 and 2002-2005 he was the deputy dean and in 1996-2002 and 2005-2011 the dean of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting, Theory of Music and Music Therapy. In 1996 he received the 1st degree Award of the Rector of the Kraol Lipiński Academy of Music. Among his students were Beata Zalewska, Waldemar Sutryk, Bartłomiej Krcha, Maciej Kwinta, Paweł Łukowiec, Agata Zubel, and Sławomir Kupczak.

His compositions, representing almost all of music genres and forms, were performed at many prestigious contemporary music festivals in Poland, including the "Warsaw Autumn" and "Musica Polonica Nova", as well as in France, the United States, Yugoslavia, Germany, Finland and Ukraine. He was a member of the jury of numerous music competitions and a laureate of a number of state awards and decorations.
