The Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Sopot was founded in February 1982. It is a 19 - member string orchestra which also performs in an extended formation with wind instruments. Under the name Wojciech Rajski Chamber Orchestra it debuted in June at the Music Theatre in Gdynia and performed a few days later at the opening of the Schleissheimer Sommer Festival in Munich and the 37th Hitzacker Sommerliche Musiktage. In 1987, the orchestra toured the United States, giving 33 concerts at venues such as the J.F Kennedy Center in Washington and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The group also visited China in 1990 and Japan in 1997.
From the beginning, the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Sopot has regularly featured at European festivals such as Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festivals, the Prague Spring and La Chaise Dieu. They have often guested at Łańcut and the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. In concerts at prestigious venues such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Musikhalle in Hamburg, La Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Vienna Musikverein, to name just a few, the PCP Sopot has hosted distinguished soloists including Mścisław Roztropowicz, Natalia Gutman, Sabine and Wolfgang Meyer, Misha Maisky, Raphael Oleg, Gary Karr and many others. The orchestra has recorded over 60 CDs for EMI, Thorofon, Sonomaster, Opus, DUX and other renowned labels.
The founder, Wojciech Rajski, remains as the director and conductor.
In 2012 the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Sopot celebrated its 30th anniversary.
