Creation

The initial phase of Bauer's ouvre is characterized by search for new sonoristic solutions which, however, stay subordinate to the superior concept, i.e. deepening the composition’s expression. The reviews of those works contain such comments as "enormous energy load", "dramatic clashes" (3 Concepts), "predatory strength" (3 Essays), "zeal and passion in music" (Invocation for violin and piano). Experimenting with new performing techniques was, however, a short and insignificant episode in Bauer’s life and he found developing the achievements of past centuries much more valuable than negating them. He admits that he grew up “admiring the great European music and tradition” which shaped his aesthetic sensibility. Fascinated with Bartók, Ravel and Stravinsky, as well as Nadia Boulanger’s outstanding personality, he became well-acquainted with formal clarity and colour subtlety typical rather for French composers than representatives of the Vienna school.
By challenging innovation as the primary evaluation category of musical composition, he found its sense in continuity and follow-up experiences of eminent composers of the past without treating their art as a source of quotes, role models, rather as an inspiration for creating new, very personal expression. One of many leads noticeable in Bauer's compositions is a reference to Ravel’s music – especially detectable in the second, melodious part of the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, composed as a kind of homage to the composer (as well as work for harpsichord and guitar titled And yet… Habanera). Reminiscenze for organ contains explicit references to Messiaen’s rhythmic and motivic patterns ("bird themes" at the end), presentation of audio material (exposure of tritone), and registration and characteristic colours of the work. Divertimento for percussion and 2 pianos, a colourful and lively music, raises a clear association with Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. Bauer’s music displays also a strong tendency to archaise (3 Old Polish Passion Songs, 3 Laments, or Mediaeval Sculptures), yet always with a reference to particular historical model which is enriched with an expression resulting from contemporary forms and genres. Bauer's compositions are recognized for their extraordinarily precise construction of forms – there is no place for unspecified ones. He based his works on traditional formal patterns and even though he used them in a fairly flexible way, each time he made sure that the form of the work remains comprehensible for the listener. The expressive aspect of his pieces is highly influenced by the disposition of audio material – in order to achieve particular sound change he uses different methods of sound selection, and the structures typically circle around few central points.
The solo and chamber output is dominated by compositions for and with guitar, many of which were awarded in competitions. He wrote Sonata In One Movement for cello and piano in 1982 for his son – an outstanding cellist. Having collaborated with him and dedicated the work to him, he composed Concerto for Cello and Orchestra 2 years later. Missa Pagana is especially worth noticing while examining his vocal-instrumental compositions. Its text is superior to the musical layer which synthesizes liturgical and pagan elements, vivid delight in the beauty of the world and a deep reflection on its problems.
