composer, b. 20 October 1957 in Jasienica near Bielsko-Biała. He studied composition with Józef Świder in the Music Academy in Katowice, graduating with honours in 1986. In 1990-92, thanks to a scholarship of the Austrian government and the Alban Berg foundation, he continued composition studies with Francis Burt in Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna. He was repeatedly granted scholarships by the Polish Ministry of Culture and Art, and in 1990 - of the Governor of the Katowice province. He participated in courses for composers in Kazimierz on the Vistula, Vienna, Borowiec and Darmstadt. In 1983 he won the 2nd prize in the competition for composers in Gdańsk for his Prelude and Toccata for piano (1983). In 1986 he received the 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Grzegorz Fitelberg Competition for Composers, respectively for his Sinfonietta for orchestra (1984) and Concerto for harpsichord and orchestra (1985). In 1987, his Poem for Orchestra won the competition for young composers organised by the Polish Composers’ Union. In 1999, his Symphony No. 1 (1996-97) was selected as the obligatory work for the 6th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice. His works have been performed at many festivals of contemporary music, including “The Warsaw Autumn”, the Festival of Polish Contemporary Music in Wrocław, the “Poznań Music Spring”, Gdańsk Encounters of Young Composers “The Road”, Capital Music Festival XI in New Jersey, Edmonton New Music Festival, Yougnam International Contemporary Music Festival in Taegu, the International Festival of Contemporary Music in Bucarest.
Since 1983, Andrzej Dziadek has been a faculty member in the Silesian University Branch in Cieszyn. Since 1993, he has held the position of president of the Katowice Branch of the Polish Composers’ Union and an organiser of the “Silesian Contemporary Music Days” festival.
