composer, born on 18th March 1961 in Białystok. In 1980-86 she studied composition with Włodzimierz Kotoński at the Music Academy in Warsaw, then in 1986-88 – composition with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatoire of Music and Dance in the Hague. She participated in the International Courses for Young Composers organised by the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM/SIMC), Polish Section, as well as the Summer Courses of New Music in Darmstadt, where she studied with such composers as lannis Xenakis, Witold Lutosławski, Thomas Kessler and François Bernard Mâche. In 2012 she obtained a PhD in composition at the Academy of Music Wrocław. In 2016 she received the degree of habilitated doctor.

She has received numerous prizes for her compositions. In 1985 she was awarded the 2nd prize of the European Young Composers’ Competition organized in Amsterdam for Ad Unum for orchestra (1985). In 1987 she was awarded the Stanislaw Wyspianski Award (2nd class). In the same year she was awarded the 2nd prize in the Young Composers’ Competition of the Polish Composers’ Union for Ride for 6 percussionists (1987). She has also won four prizes in the Competition for Composers organised by the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Composers' Union: in 1986 she received 1st prize for Quinto for two pianos (1986), in 1987 – 1st prize for Breathe for string orchestra (1987), in 1988 – 3rd prize for Cannon for violin and piano (1988), and in 1989 – 2nd prize for aaa TRE for viola, cello and double bass (1988).

In 1999, she was elected Composer of the Year in Gelderland. In November 2000, the Deutschlandfunk Radio in Cologne organised a composer concert dedicated exclusively to Kulenty’s works, and recorded on CD. In 2003 her Trumpet Concerto (2002) won the first prize at UNESCO’s 50th International Rostrum of Composers, for which she received the UNESCO Mozart Medal from the International Music Council. Her compositions Preludium, Postludium and Psalm for cello and accordion (2007) and String Quartet No. 3 – Tel me about it (2008), were respectively chosen among the ten best Dutch compositions of 2007 and 2008 during the ‘Toonzetters’ contest in Amsterdam. In 2015 she received the Annual Award of the Polish Composers’ Union for her outstanding body of compositions, strong individuality and combination of musical vigor with interesting structural solutions.

From 1989 she works as a free lance composer, recipient of numerous commissions and scholarships, including the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (Germany, 1990), Grants from Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (Holland, 1993-2009), Grants from The Performing Arts Fund (The Netherlands, 2010-2015). In 1999/2000 she was composer-in-residence with Het Gelders Orkest in The Netherlands. She participated in the "Composing Commissions" programme implemented by the Institute of Music and Dance in Poland, which resulted in commissions for five works. She has also recived commissions from the Dutch ensemble De Ereprijs, Kronos Quartet and many others.

Hanna Kulenty writes for solo instruments, chamber groups and large orchestras. She has written two operas, music for television plays and films. Her compositions have been premiered during festivals throughout the world, like Huddersfield Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Münchener Biennale, Warsaw Autumn, Musica Polonica Nova and the Netherlands Music Days. Her numerous orchestral pieces have been performed by symphony orchestra’s in Holland, Denmark, Poland and Germany, with conducters like David Porcelijn, Antoni Wit, Peter Hirsch, Peter Eötvös, Ingo Metzmacher, Renato Rivolta and Ronald Zollman. Soloists like Isabelle van Keulen, Elżbieta Chojnacka, Marco Blaauw, Frank Peters, Lucas & Arthur Jussen and Geneviève Strosser have performed her work, as did ensembles like Arditti Quartet, Leipzig String Quartet, ensemble De Ereprijs and Alexander von Schlippenbach Trio.

She has taught at numerous courses of composition, e.g. in Apeldoorn (1995), Radziejowice and Munich (1996), Amsterdam (1997) and California (1998). In 2005 she lectured at the Other Minds 10 festival in San Francisco and at the Soundstreams Canada in Toronto. In that same year she was guest professor at the Conservatory of Zwolle. In 2007 she was guest professor at the ESMuC, Music Academy in Barcelona. In 2013 she was a visiting professor at Missouri State University, Springfield. Since 2015 she has lectured at the Faculty of Composition, Theory of Music and Sound Engineering at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, currently as a professor.

Since 1992 Hanna Kulenty has divided her time between Warsaw and Arnhem, Holland. She has been a jury member of numerous music competitions, including the Munich Biennale (1995), the International Gaudeamus Music Week (2002), the International New Chamber Opera Competition “Orpheus-Luciano Berio 2003-2004”, and the International Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music in Kraków (2005, 2007). Her compositions are published by the dutch publishing house Donemus and the Polish Music Publishing House (PWM).
