On October 13, 2024, at 6:00 PM, the NFM Choir, conducted by Lionel Sow, will present a stylistically diverse program, featuring works by British composers alongside pieces from Finland, Poland, and the United States, all set to the words of Shakespeare.
Paweł Łukaszewski has composed settings of Shakespeare's remarkable sonnets – Sonnet XXVII ("Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed") and Sonnet LX ("Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore"). Despite the title of his cycle Songs and Sonnets, the jazz musician George Shearing did not include sonnets but instead focused on excerpts from Shakespeare's comedies. He also incorporated a love poem by Christopher Marlowe titled The Passionate Shepherd to His Love. The concert will also feature works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, George Shearing, and John Tavener.
The choir will be accompanied by instrumentalists Chengpei Gui (piano), Tomasz Kaczmarek (piano), and Zbigniew Kozera (double bass). The concert is part of the “NFM Promotes” program, which supports young artists from Lower Silesia.
