The repertoire concept of the album Cinematic Inspirations, published by Sfera Records as part of the "Muzyczny ślad" ("Musical Trace") program, focuses on the works of Joanna Bruzdowicz (1943–2021) interpreted by the Czarakcziew / Kowal Duo. The album features pieces from various periods of the composer's career, showcasing a broad spectrum of her musical language and sensitivity.
The album is not only a tribute to Joanna Bruzdowicz but also a presentation of music characterized by a collision of classical formal discipline with an admiration for color, rhythm, and sound experimentation. The piano holds a special place in her works as an instrument with which she was also deeply connected to as a performer.
A particular point of reference for this album is Largo from the film Jacquot de Nantes, directed by Agnès Varda, which Joanna Bruzdowicz herself arranged for cello and piano. It was this very transcription that provided the impulse for the "Cinematic Inspirations" project—a recording of the composer's film music arranged for cello and piano. Most of the pieces featured on the album are transcriptions prepared by Diego Santamaría, faithfully capturing the spirit of the original compositions while allowing for the discovery of new colors and interpretative perspectives.
A more lyrical tone emerges in Romantic Ballad (from the film Le jupon rouge, directed by Geneviève Lefebvre). It is music that is sensual yet restrained, characterized by a clear structure and repetitiveness of motifs.
The piece La Mort (from the film Un air si pur, directed by Yves Angelo) is characterized by an ascetic musical language. Based on perfect intervals and long pauses, it emphasizes a state of suspension between life and death.
In Les Âmes grises (based on the film by Philippe Claudel), Bruzdowicz creates dark sonorities and long melodic arcs, eliminating dramatic culminations—the music floats in a state of constant tension between reflection and emotion.
The cycle The White King – Suite (from the film by Alex Helfrecht and Jörg Tittel) closes the album as a kind of musical study of a totalitarian world. Seven miniatures form a cohesive cycle of sonic images: from the lyrical Family, through the dark Curfew and rhythmic Village Folk, to the dramatic The Long Walk and the final Coda – Family. In this chamber version, the suite takes on a new dimension: it becomes an independent work in which tensions and contrasts build a narrative as powerful as the film itself, yet abstaining from being literal.
