On December 6, the album “Tomasz J. Opałka / Ensemble OMN | Dimorphos” was released, marking a significant summary of the long-term collaboration between composer Tomasz Jakub Opałka, the Orchestra of New Music (Ensemble OMN), and Szymon Bywalec. The album features recordings of three concertos written for soloists known for their openness to experimentation and sophisticated virtuosity: Bartłomiej Dusi (saxophone), Katarzyna Duda (violin), Jadwiga Czarkowska-Harasimowicz (bass clarinet), and Roman Widaszek (bassethorn). The album was released by the independent label Requiem Records / Opus Series (OPUS 104 | 2024).
This album is a culmination of the 14-year history of Tomasz J. Opałka's collaboration with the New Music Orchestra, which began in Beijing during the Beijing Modern Festival in 2010. The repertoire includes three instrumental concertos written for the aforementioned soloists and Ensemble OMN: Saxophone Concerto "Black Rainbows", Violin Concerto "Afterglow", and Concerto for Bassett Horn, Bass Clarinet, and Chamber Orchestra "Dimorphos".
Opałka, known for his unwavering passion for orchestral sound, challenges performers with Dimorphos, a colorful and intriguing album, bold both in terms of performance technique and composition.
The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the "Musical Footprint" program, implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
An energetic, psychedelic journey that required constant alertness and rapid transitions between different types of saxophone – often literally in the blink of an eye!
