Warsaw | Festival Paweł Mykietyn – Contexts

MykietynThe Paweł Mykietyn – Contexts festival is a unique chance to get closer to the work of this exceptional composer-visionary. The event will run between 7 and 11 October 2020 at the Nowy Theatre in Warsaw.

It is rare for such phenomenal comets to appear in the firmament of contemporary music, hypnotising us with their beauty and dramaturgically accomplished narration, using clearly polished and precise means. Nevertheless, these same qualities apply to the works of another composer, older by a single generation, someone Mykietyn chose at the outset of his career to be his main point of reference – Paweł Szymański. This is why his music is here the counterpoint to the main Mykietyn theme.

These four concerts are a chance to hear both early compositions as well as Mykietyn's newest works, the whole festival allowing us to engage with the newest histories of Polish music and its fascinating genetic threads. The Festival closes with a concert of electronic music, with iconic masterpieces created for the tape by Paweł Mykietyn, Paweł Szymański, Adam Falkiewicz and a pioneer of Polish electronic music – Włodzimierz Kotoński, who taught these three genius composers, together representing three separate generations.

Outstanding artists were invited to participate in the event, including: Sinfonia Varsovia conducted by the charismatic Bassem Akiki, Jadwiga Rappe (alto), Michał Sławecki (countertenor), Lutosławski String Quartet and the Royal String Quartet, as well as the energetic harpsichordist Małgorzata Sarbak and the percussionist Miłosz Pękala

The festival was co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage as part of the "Music" programme carried out by the Institute of Music and Dance.
