Penderecki

On October 30, 2018 at 7.30 pm, the St. Catherine's Church in Kraków will host a concert on the occasion of Krzysztof Penderecki's jubilee and the 100th anniversary of regaining independence.

Krzysztof Penderecki ‒ one of the most famous and most distinguished contemporary music composers, celebrates his 85th birthday this year. The artist has many connections with Kraków ‒ as a rector and later professor at the Kraków Academy of Music, doctor honoris causa of the Jagiellonian University, member of the Social Committee for the Restoration of Krakow's Monuments, Honorary Citizen of the City of Krakow and Chairman of the Artistic and Programme Council of the Royal Orchestra of the City of Krakow Sinfonietta Cracovia.

On October 30 in the the St. Catherine's Church, Krzysztof Penderecki's Te Deum will be performed by Sinfonietta Cracovia under the baton of its director Jurek Dybał along with excellent soloists, the Cracow Singers vocal ensemble and the Armenian Hover Chamber Choir. Te Deum is a joyful, celebratory composition written by Penderecki in honor of the newly elected Polish Pope, John Paul II. Historical inspiration of this sublime and endearing work, completed just a few weeks before the events of August 1980, is the starting point for the celebration of another holiday: the 100th anniversary of the liberation of Krakow, which ‒ as the first Polish city ‒ regained its independence on October 31, 1918.

Concert in the St. Catherine's Church is open to the residents of Krakow and guests. Free entry cards are available at two InfoKraków points ‒ 2 St. Jan Street and in the Wyspiański Pavilion. BeczalaA recital by Piotr Beczała will take place on October 28, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Teatr Wielki  Polish National Opera.

The hottest name among lyrical tenors in the world. In 2018 he was awarded an operatic Oscar – the International Opera Award for the best male singer. For years he has been performing the most important tenor parts at the Metropolitan Opera and the Wiener Staatsoper. Yet another, after Jan Kiepura, ‘boy from Silesia’ who easily wins over subsequent operatic stages of the world with his singing and acting. His success is compared to Luciano Pavarotti’s career, and Piotr Beczała is often called his successor. He rarely sings in Poland, which is why a lieder recital accompanied at the piano by Helmut Deutsch is one of few occasions to listen to the master.

The programme will include works by Stefano Donaudy, Ermano Wolf-Ferrari, Ottorino Respighi, and Francesco Paolo Tosti. The second part will be devoted entirely to Polish music. We will hear Six Songs, Op. 2 by Karol Szymanowski, songs by Mieczysław Karłowicz (Czasem, gdy długo na pół sennie marzę; Na spokojnym ciemnym morzu; Rdzawe liście; W wieczorną ciszę; Zasmuconej; Przed nocą wieczną; Zaczarowana królewna) and Stanisław Moniuszko (Dwie zorze, Prząśniczka, Polna różyczka, Krakowiaczek ci ja).
