Toruń | Forces of Nature Festival "Fire Spirit"

TOSThe Toruń Symphony Orchestra invites you to the next edition of the Forces of Nature Festival. The concerts on October 12-21, 2018 will prove the power of fire in music as well!

Last year's Force of Nature  Festival – "Earth, Planets, Stars" – started a project that aims to present artistic relationships that naturally occur between the elements and music. After bringing the audience closer to the magic of the forces of the earth and its impact on the work of artists, the time has come for the passionate power of fire. Forces of Nature Festival "Fire Spirit" includes a variety of concerts dedicated to music lovers, but also a repertoir for children, presenting works full of flaming temperament and frenetic pace. Some events will combine music with passionate dance, while others will provide us with realistic listening experience.

Fire has varied profiles and forms. It may conceal its dangerous profile in the form of a seemingly harmless flame of a candle; yet, it may also be an openly destructive force, which creates a new reality because of its destructiveness. Each and every of varied fires has a different melody, and emits different sounds, which will be presented to members of the audience in the course of the concert on October 19th, bearing the title of 'Fiery Worlds'. The Toruń Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Paweł Przytocki will premiere Magdalena Cynk's Dance of Fire.

Warsaw | Premiere of Paderewski's "Manru" directed by Marek Weiss

Manru

The first premiere of the 2018/2019 season of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera will be held on October 12, 2018. Ignacy Jan Paderewski's Manru, the only Polish opera staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York over 100 years ago, returns with a new staging of director Marek Weiss.

It was not ambition, but financial trouble that brought Paderewski to the shores of America in 1891. The new continent hailed him as a wizard of the keyboard. He himself hoped at the time that the keyboard wouldn’t be the end of it and that the world would grow to appreciate him also as a composer. The draft of his first opera, based on Kraszewski’s novel The Cottage Outside the Village [Chata za wsią], was ready. The libretto was penned by the journalist and sculptor Alfred Nossig, while the composer continued to rework subsequent versions of the piece in his spare time between concerts. It took several years. In the meantime he got married, became a father, was widowed, remarried and lost his son. The handicapped boy died in 1901 – the same year that Manru premiered in Dresden. Next it opened in Lviv a few days later, and in the States in February 1902, making history as the first Polish opera ever to be staged at the Metropolitan Opera. After a brief triumph it became forgotten for many years. What will the director Marek Weiss find in this touching tale of unhappy love played out against the background of a class society – especially in our world of awakening nationalisms and growing intolerance? Without a doubt the lovers’ rapture, gypsy marches and the frenetic element of Paderewski’s only opera will impress with their superb sound world, at the same time surprising us with the piece’s timeless relevance.

The spectacle is co-produced with the Poznań Opera House. The soloists (Peter Berger, Ewa Tracz, Mikołaj Zalasiński, Anna Lubańska, Monika Ledzion-Porczyńska, Łukasz Goliński i Dariusz Machej), the Choir and Orchestra of Teatr Wielki – National Opera will be led by Grzegorz Nowak.

Warsaw | Sinfonia Iuventus: Inauguration of the 2018/2019 artistic season

SIThe Polish Orchestra Sinfonia Iuventus invites you to a symphony concert inaugurating the 11th artistic season of the ensemble, which will take place in the concert hall of the National Philharmonic in Warsaw on October 8, 2018 at 7.00 p.m. The programme includes works of Mendelssohn, Moniuszko and Karłowicz.

The greatest solo concertos in musical literature are often the product of the collaboration of a great composer with an outstanding virtuoso – this can also be said of Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, the late masterpiece by Felix Mendelssohn composed for his friend, Ferdinand David. The premiere took place on the 13th of March 1845, and the work was immediately received with enthusiasm by the audience, and from that moment on, it has not departed concert stages, remaining one of the greatest musical hits of all time. The audience of the inaugural concert will hear this masterpiece performed by Krzysztof Jakowicz, one of the most outstanding Polish violinists.

Before the era of the great symphonic poems, whose master was to be Mieczysław Karłowicz, concerto overtures played a similar role in narrative, programmatic forms. Stanisław Moniuszko’s popular Fairy Tale from 1848 is an example of such suggestive music, whose contrasting themes form a fascinating “story” – but we never find out what it is about. The composer left this to the listener’s imagination without betraying any literary programme.

Mieczysław Karłowicz’s Rebirth Symphony corresponds to the Classic-Romantic framework of the four-movement cycle, and its ideological basis is a comprehensive, original programme (published in Słowo Polskie before the Lviv premiere in 1903), in the Young Poland style. It speaks of a “gloomy, malicious singing” and a slow awakening of a soul immersed in lethargy (part I), contemplation of the world bathed in the rays of the sun (part II), the temptations of trivial pleasures to which the soul is exposed (part III) and finally – the eponymous rebirth of the human spirit to the call of the “eternal slogan”.

Gostyń - Święta Góra | Final of the 13th edition of the "Sacromontana" Festival

Sacro

The final concert of the 13th edition of the "Sacromontana" Oratory Music Festival will take place on October 7, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. in the Święta Góra Sanctuary in Głogówek near Gostyń.

For almost 200 years, Józef Zeidler's works were completely unknown. It was not until the first edition of the Oratory Music Festival "Musica Sacromontana" that this situation changed. Today, the composer born in Gostyń is known as the "unknown Polish Mozart", and his religious works are valued for their transparency, elegance and simplicity. During the concert "Unknown Józef Zeidler", we will hear his Missa ex D. The source materials come from the collections of music manuscripts of the parish ensemble from Grodzisk Wielkopolski. Currently, the composition is kept in the Archdiocesan Archives in Poznań.

The work will be performed by the Orchestra of the Royal Capital City of Krakow – Sinfonietta Cracovia, Polish Chamber Choir Schola Cantorum Gedanensis and soloists: Iwona Hossa – soprano, Anna Bernacka – mezzo-soprano, Tomasz Krzysica – tenor, Jarosław Bręk – baritone. The musicians under the direction of Marcin Nałęcz-Niesiołowski will also make the premiere recording of Zeidler's composition. The programme of the evening will be complemented by Three pieces in old style for string orchestra by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. Admission to the concert is free.
