The "Piano e Forte" Festival and Competition, whose founder and artistic director is pianist Marta Polańska, is an innovative project that works in a holistic way. The aim of the "Piano e Forte" Festival and Competition is to show the history of the piano's evolution in the context of the development of the piano repertoire, the study of mutual relations, and the impact of new achievements in the piano mechanism on the repertoire as well as innovative composing techniques for instrument development. The "Piano e Forte" competition is also aimed at inspiring young pianists to deepen their knowledge of the history of the instrument, raising awareness of the performing practices of a diverse repertoire on contemporary and historical pianos, as well as learning interpretational trends and piano literature of different epochs.

Wrocław | Anne-Sophie Mutter's Recital at the National Forum of Music

asm

On March 14, 2018 at 7 p.m. at the National Forum of Music works by Krzysztof Penderecki will be interpreted by the outstanding violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

A multiple winner of Grammy Award in the category of classical and a student of the legendary Herbert von Karajan, invites you to her recital at the National Forum of Music. Anne-Sophie Mutter will once again prove that she fits perfectly in the repertoire from different eras – the program of the concert will include Baroque and Romantic music. A special place will be taken by Polish musicians: we will hear two works by one of the nestors of contemporary Polish music, Krzysztof Penderecki.

Anne-Sophie Mutter is today one of the most recognizable violinists, appreciated by music lovers around the world. Mutter's remarkable talent has been appreciated by contemporary composers, and in addition to the classical repertoire, the artist also performs new music. The Polish audience eagerly accepted her collaboration with leading Polish composers: Witold Lutosławski and Krzysztof Penderecki. Mutter's friendship with Penderecki resulted in works dedicated to the famous violinist, two of which we will hear at the NFM Main Concert Hall. One of them is Duo concertante per violino e contrabbasso, commissioned by the Mutter foundation. The piece was written for the artist and one of her scholarship holders, Roman Patcol. La Follia per violino solo was a birthday present for Mutter; the premiere of this composition took place less than five years ago at the New York Carnegie Hall. The work refers to baroque music, and for the performer it is a great virtuoso challenge.

Rossini's "Semiramide" live from MET on March 10th

met

Gioachino Rossini's opera seria Semiramide will be broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York on March 10, 2018 at the Praha Cinema in Warsaw.

This masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks makes a rare Met appearance – its first in nearly 25 years – with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon, who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, a trouser role sung by Elizabeth DeShong. Javier Camarena, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Ryan Speedo Green complete the stellar cast.

Semiramide is the culmination of the Italian phase of Rossini’s monumental yet unusual career. He had already produced such immortal comedies as Il Barbiere di Siviglia and L’Italiana in Algeri, but in the early 19th century he was celebrated above all else for his tragedies – none more so than Semiramide. For decades after its premiere, the opera swept through the music capitals of Europe and beyond, enthralling audiences with its urgent, transcendentally beautiful use of melody; undeniably exhilarating drama; and, most importantly, astonishing vocal displays. Rossini’s epic is set in ancient Babylon, now modern-day Iraq, a kingdom which flourished between the 18th and sixth centuries BCE. While the opera does include a handful of local details for color, including the legendary Hanging Gardens, Rossini and Rossi were more concerned with establishing a feeling of legend and wonder than presenting any true historical accuracy.

The music of Semiramide combines the cherished assets of Rossini’s style—magnificent vocalism, irresistible melody, buoyant energy—with achievements unique to this score. The extremely difficult vocal style necessary for the solos is evident from the title character’s ravishing aria, “Bel raggio lusinghier.” Rossini’s famous mastery of rhythm forms the core of this opera. In the justly famous duets, subtle rhythmic changes and pulsing melodic figures illustrate the characters’ emerging realizations. And the towering ensembles, such as the extended Act I finale, are proof of the vast musical conception Rossini realized in this opera, far beyond opportunities limited to superficial vocal display.

The performance will be in the original language (Italian) with Polish subtitles. List of cinemas, dates of shows and cast – here.

Cracow | National Students' Scientific Conference "Elementi6 Performatics"

ElementiNational Students' Scientific Conference "Elementi6 Performatics" will be held between March 9-11, 2018 at the headquarters of the Academy of Music in Krakow (43 St. Tomasz street). The event, which will be accompanied by concerts of new music, is organized by the Students of Music Theory and Students of Composition Research Circles of the Music Academy in Kraków under the supervision of dr Ewa Wójtowicz and prof. Anna Zawadzka-Gołosz.

Permormance – this term is not very obvious and can be understood quite broadly. An example of this is new music, in which the elements of theatricality appear more and more often – even with the sounds itself or even above it there is a gesture, movement and focus on the body. In this context, "Elementi6" focuses on the role of the performer, who often is suddenly faced with tasks that are much more difficult than just performing or "playing" music. During the conference panels, papers on this subject will be given not only by theorists, but also by instrumentalists and composers, including Tadeusz Wielecki, Piotr Peszat, Marcin Strzelecki, Paweł Malinowski, Jakub Krzewiński, and Karolina Dąbek. However, we will be talking not only about issues related to the visual side – which is the main and probably the most important feature of performative works – but also about ways of notation, ideological themes, and finally about the impact of this type of media on the audiences.

"Elementi6" will be inaugurated on March 9 at 8.00 p.m. with the concert of Spółdzielnia Muzyczna band, who will perform, among, others, works of Piotr Peszat. The conference will be opened on March 10 and on this day the installation by Julian Gołosz, expression: non 2018, will be presented and three concerts will take place: recital of drummer Aleksander Wnuk (6.30 pm), electronic duet of Izabela Smelczyńska and Mateusz Śmigasiewicz (7.15 pm) and Elementi Orchestra conducted by Nadim Husni and Maciej Koczura (at 8.00 pm.), who will present compositions by Kamil Kruk, Monika Szpyrka and Tadeusz Wielecki. During the concert of students, PhD students and graduates of the Academy of Music in Krakow on March 11 at 4.00 pm pieces by recognized composers of new music, such as Tadeszu Wielecki, will be performed.

Bydgoszcz | Premiere of Jerzy Maksymiuk's „Fairy Dreams”

fp

The premiere of Jerzy Maksymiuk's Fairy Dreams, dedicated to the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz, will take place on March 9, 2018 at 7.00 p.m. at the Bydgoszcz Philharmonic.

Outstanding names and amazing program – these are unquestionable advantages of this symphonic evening. Maestro Jerzy Maksymiuk will be on the podium and he will perform for the first time his Fairy Dreams – the work dedicated to the Bydgoszcz Philharmonic. The solo parts will be performed by soloists from the Pomeranian Symphony Orchestra, with whom Maestro Maksymiuk has been cooperating for many years. For example, in 2015 he led the inauguration of the 53rd Bydgoszcz Music Festival with Paderewski's "Polonia" Symphony. The artist recorded this symphonic work together with the Bydgoszcz orchestra on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Pomeranian Philharmonic in 2013 (DUX).

The second special guest of the concert is Adam Makowicz – an outstanding pianist, jazz legend, master of improvisation. In addition to typical jazz standards and works, the pianist's repertoire also includes classical music. In addition, he composed over 100 works for string quartet and jazz trio, many piano pieces, and he is the author of music for animated films and documentaries. In masterly interpretation of Makowicz, we will hear Gershwin's masterpiece Blue Rhapsody, commissioned in 1924 by the contemporary "king of jazz", Paul Whiteman. The evening will culminate with Stravinsky's masterpiece –  music for the famous fantasy ballet in one act, two scenes, entitled The Firebird. After the world premiere of the piece, critics wrote: "The Firebird is an intoxicating blend of oriental colors. It connects the brilliant orchestration of Rimsky-Korsakov with the dreamy melodies of Borodin, rising to the heights of expression."
