Opole | Forgotten Polish Music

FO

A repertoire of the concert on March 29, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at the Józef Elsner Opole Philharmonic is an intriguing combination of works by three composers.

Grażyna Bacewicz (whose 110th birthday and 50th death anniversaries fall this year) was a great violinist, winner of the First Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition. Therefore, her compositions were mainly written for this instrument. Nevertheless, she also created for symphony orchestra, and her Ouverture from 1943 is a flagship example. It will be peerformed by the Symphony Orchestra of the Opole Philharmonic directed by Przemysław Neumann.

Dmitri Shostakovich was claimed as the greatest symphonist of the twentieth century. Although the times in which he lived determined his musical language, the composer brilliantly smuggled the characteristic irony, elements of the grotesque and dramaturgy into his works. These features are evident in his Cello Concerto No. 1 in E flat major, which will be performed by Bartosz Koziak. In the finale of the evening, we will listen to the popular Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an exhibition, instrumented by Maurice Ravel.

The concert is held under the patronage of the PWM Edition as part of the TUTTI.pl project promoting the performances of Polish music.
