A concert on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice will be held on 5 March 2020 at 07.30 p.m at the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall. The NPRSO under the baton of Lawrence Foster and world-famous artists Pinchas Zukerman and Amanda Forsyth will perform works composed by eminent artists.
The last part of Krzysztof Penderecki's "triptych" – De natura sonoris No. 3 – was written almost half a century after the composer's first attempt to explore the nature of sound in an orchestra, inspired by the epicurean poem of Lucretius. Penderecki no longer collects research material: he skillfully recapitulates the evolution of his style and technique.
Johannes Brahms created the Double Concerto, his last symphonic work, with the cellist friend Robert Hausmann and the former violinist friend Józef Joachim in mind. It was a gift for reconciliation wilth the latter, after the divorce of the violinist with Amalia Joachim, one of Brahms' closest associates. The gesture was appreciated: both virtuosos took part in the first performance.
The Concerto for orchestra is one of the last works by Bela Bartók: it is possible that the commission from Sergei Kusewicki prolonged the life of the ailing and underestimated Hungarian composer in exile. The reckoning with the past is a feature of all the late works of great artists – in this masterly yet accessible composition, Bartók combined native folk melodies, references to European impressionism and American traditional music.
