On the 20th of June, 1922, General Stanisław Szeptycki, at the head of his troops, entered the Katowice market square from the side of Szopienice, welcomed by the inhabitants and the authorities. The culmination of this symbolic event was the signing of the Act of Acquisition of Upper Silesia by the government of the Republic of Poland less than a month later, on the 16th of July.

Katowice is celebrating this exceptional anniversary with a series of events that will culminate in a concert of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

Together with the Royal String Quartet he will play the famous Franz Schubert String Quintet in C major, one of the artist's last works. The evening will be inaugurated by Black Angels of Georg Crumb - the composer who died this year, called his work ‘a kind of parable about our tormented modern world’ and wrote about it "in tempore belli" (in the time of war). The composition, created in 1970, was a strong voice of opposition to the war in Vietnam and is unfortunately still valid today.

Wroclaw | 'Song of the Night'. End of the season of the NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic

The last work tonight will be a masterpiece of Polish music of the early 20th century by Karol Szymanowski. The orchestra will be conducted by its Artistic Director Giancarlo Guerrero.

Karol Szymanowski’s Symphony No. 3 'Song of the Night' was written at a time when the composer was vividly fascinated by the culture of Persia. This fascination was reflected both in the lavish, bold and sensual colours of the sound, as well as in his choice of the text. Szymanowski reached for a poem by the thirteenth-century Persian poet and mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, translated by Tadeusz Miciński

Krasnogruda | Premiere of 'Lilie' performance on the 200 anniversary of Adam Mickiewicz's Ballades and Romances Edition

POLMICMedia patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC

Antonina Jakubowska's Dance Theater invites you to the premiere of the performance entitled Lilies with music by Jan Gromski, choreographed by Antonina Jakubowska, created on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Adam Mickiewicz's Ballades and Romances. The event will take place on the 23rd of June, 2022 at 9 p.m. in the picturesque scenery of the Czesław Miłosz Manor in Krasnogruda, on the border of Poland and Lithuania. Admission to the event is free!

In creating the ballad Lilies, Mickiewicz combined romantic idealism with the simplicity of a folk parable. This is also the case in the performance of Antonina Jakubowska and Jan Gromski. There will be references to the musical folklore of the Slavs, processed using specially created electronic sounds. Bogumił Wiśniewski's costumes will be inspired by nature and movement in nature, showing the transition between the real and mystical worlds. Choreography is an attempt to reconcile classical techniques with contemporary dance techniques.
