Wrocław | Master of Modernity

NFMThe National Forum of Music presents the works by contemporary artists and those constituting the canon of the concert repertoire. A synthesis of these two trends will be the concert programme on 22 October 2021 at 7.00 p.m. during which we will listen to compositions from the Romantic era and a new work for cello and orchestra by a prominent Polish composer of today – Paweł Szymański.

Marzena Diakun and the NFM Choir will perform five pieces for a cappella choir by Anton Bruckner: Os justi WAB 30, Ave Maria WAB 6, Locus iste WAB 23, Christus factus est WAB 11, and Virga jesse floruit WAB 52. These are raw, ascetic, yet delicate pieces, and deeply spiritual too.

Next, the cellist Magdalena Bojanowicz-Koziak will perform Simple Music for cello and orchestra by Paweł Szymański, who is known as a composer of spiritual independence, often critical of present-day developments in music and able to integrate it in an interesting way with elements taken from the past, especially from the Baroque era. Szymański has described his artistic credo as follows: ‘The contemporary artist, including the composer, is in the chains of two extremes. On the one hand, he is in danger of talking gibberish if he completely rejects tradition, and on the other, he can become banal if he stares too much at it. This is the paradox of practicing art today. What is the way out of this situation? Since you cannot completely free yourself from the banality, you must play a game with this banality, treat it as a material that allows you to maintain certain elements of the convention, but at the same time, using quotation marks, metaphors, paradoxes, you have to distance yourself from it.’

The concert will be crowned with a performance of Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 4 in C minor.

The commissioning of work by Paweł Szymański was subsidised from the Culture Promotion Fund of the Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport as part of the ‘Composing Commissions’ programme realised by the National Institute of Music and Dance.

Wrocław | The Garden of Love

pThe LutosAir Quintet and saxophonist Bartłomiej Duś will perform on 24 October 2021 at 6.00 p.m. at the National Forum of Music. The programme will include works for saxophone, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn. The artists will also premiere Miłosz Wośko's Aeration Channels for wind quintet and electronics.

The concert will begin with Henri Tomasi's Printemps (Spring). Next, we will hear the graceful and unpretentious Suite of another French artist – Charles-Édouard Lefebvre, representing the Romantic Era. This will be followed by The Garden of Love – a piece by the Dutch composer Jacob ter Veldhuis (b. 1951) for soprano saxophone and tape.

Miłosz Wośko, whose new composition for wind quintet and electronics will be premiered during the concert, is a representative of the so-called third trend in jazz music: he combines elements of jazz and classical music in his works. The latest piece by this multi-talented musician "is full of ambiguity, history and emotions", as described by the composer himself.

The concert will end with Darius Milhaud's suite Scaramouche, Op. 165.

The project is part of the commemoration of the centennial of regaining independence and rebuilding Polish statehood.

The commissioned works were recorded for the first time.

The programme of the concert will include Beniamin Baczewski's Niezmierzone wody [Vast Waters], referring to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Poland's Wedding to the Sea, Maciej Zakrzewski's Nigdy więcej wojny [No more war], which the composer dedicated to Gdańsk as a symbol, an allegory of dreams about peace, freedom and independence, Anotni Wojnar's Ulica Mariacka [Mariacka Street], inspired by the famous street in Gdańsk, and Kamil Cieślik's Stellaeburgum [Constellation], which title refers to the name of the Jan Heweliusz astronomical observatory built in the attic of one of Gdańsk tenement houses.

Gdynia | Paweł Łukaszewski's "Requiem" on the 80th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Maksymilian Kolbe in Auschwitz

Polski Chór KameralnyThis year marks the 80th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Polish Saint Maximilian Kolbe. To commemorate this occasion, Polish Chamber Choir, Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra and soloists conducted by Jan Łukaszewski will perform Paweł Łukaszewski's Requiem on 30 October 2021 at 7.30 p.m. in the Franciscan Fathers Church in Gdynia.

The concert will take place at the St. Anthony's Chapel, which is the foundation of the present church, and which was personally consecrated by the future saint in May 1937. The concert under the patronage of Tadeusz Wojda, Metropolitan Archbishop of Gdańsk, will be held thanks to the cooperation with the Franciscan Order and the support from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the authorities of Gdańsk and Gdynia.

The figure of Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe is known in Poland, but also in the world, for the heroic deed that the Franciscan undertook in 1941. He volunteered to die in place of a fellow prisoner Franciszek Gajowniczek in the German death camp of Auschwitz. When he decided to go to death, he said, "I want to encourage others to live." He became the first Pole to be canonized after World War II.

Requiem (Latin for "rest") is a musical setting of the mass performed on All Souls' Day and during mourning ceremonies. On the eve of the celebration of All Saints' Day, Paweł Łukaszewski's Requiem will be presented by world-famous Polish ensembles and soloists: Italian soprano Roberta Mameli and Polish baritone Adam Krużel.

Katowice | Concert for Krzysztof Baculewski’s 70th birthday

BaculewskiIt is common knowledge that birthday is best celebrated in a circle of friends. Krzysztof Baculewski will celebrate his 70th birthday on 30 October 2021 at 6.00 p.m. with Camerata Silesia, an ensemble he has been collaborating with for nearly three decades now.

Baculewski joins the achievements of contemporary musical language with a tradition established by great masters. Therefore, it is difficult to imagine more suitable interpreters of his works than the Silesian singers who are equally skilled in performing music from various eras, from the Renaissance to the present time. Except Nox ultima, nox beata, all the pieces in the programme were composed with Camerata in mind, while The Profane Anthem to Anne, blending the qualities of timbre with the spirit of Henry Purcell’s baroque, was the beginning of the composer and Anna Szostak’s joint artistic way. We are also going to enjoy the concert premiere of Glosa – a sonoristic (compliant with the title) commentary on art and the surrounding reality, which premiered virtually in 2020.

The concert will also feature the premiere of Krzysztof Baculewski’s latest composition L'ordre règne à Varsovie for soloists quartet, 8-voice mixed choir and string quintet. "'L'ordre règne à Varsovie' – is a visual commentary on the statements of the French foreign minister Horace Sébastiani, published in the daily 'Le Moniteur' by the famous nineteenth-century graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist Grandville in September 1831,"  writes the composer about the sources of his inspiration. "Anyway – this sentence can be ironically applied to many other situations, both historical and present. Grandville's lithography in combination with Julian Tuwim's morality play create a pair of intellectual tools for viewing reality, to which the undersigned allowed himself to add music. On 21 October 2021, 190 years have passed since the fall of the November Uprising."
