Warsaw | Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra - Concert dedicated to fighting Ukraine

On the 19th of March 2022 at 7 p.m. in the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of the Polish Radio Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra will perform together with conductor Paweł Przytocki and Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova at the concert dedicated to fighting Ukraine.

The concert will start with Ukraine’s national anthem, Ще не вмерла України ні слава, ні воля (“Ukraine has not yet died, nor her glory, nor her freedom”), the lyrics of which (written by Pavlo Chubynsky) are an intended reference to the incipit of Dąbrowski’s Mazurka.

The programme will also include pieces composed by artists representing the same generation of Ukrainian music who, however, followed different paths and stylistic trends. Myroslav Skoryk, born in 1938, was a prominent figure in Ukraine’s musical environment as a composer and musicologist, as well as an artistic director of the Kyiv Opera. Valentyn Silvestrov, one year senior to Skoryk, is one of the most popular Ukrainian composers in the world. His music has undergone an interesting evolution from avant-garde experiments to postmodern turn towards tradition, which his music draws fascinating inspirations from. The Messenger is a particularly interesting example, because the piece includes references to Mozart’s music, decomposed and subjectively arranged into new qualities.

During the concert, the solo piano parts will be performed by Anna Fedorova, an eminent Ukrainian artist, winner of numerous international piano competitions. She performs solo as a chamber musician and with symphonic orchestras in such prestigious halls as Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées or Zurich Tonhalle. She gave performances at festivals in Germany, France, Italy, Ukraine, the United States, Mexico and Argentina, and is also well known to Polish audiences.

The concert will be directed by outstanding conductor Paweł Przytocki, the Artistic Director of the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonic in Łódź since the 2017-2018 season.

Anna Sułkowska-Migoń took part in the concert preparation as participant of the ‘Conductor-Resident’ programme. The event is co-organized by the National Institute of Music and Dance as part of the programme ‘Conductor-Resident’ financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

Wrocław | Songs of a Princess

The great attraction of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic concert on the 25th of March 2022 at 7 p.m. conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero will be the Polish premiere of the new version of Six Songs of a Fairy Tale Princess by Karol Szymanowski. The solo part will be sung by Iwona Sobotka, one of the most respected and recognizable Polish singers of our time.

The concert will begin with the performance of Interludium – a short, late work by Witold Lutosławski, which was supposed to go between two other pieces: Chain II and Partita. It is devoid of any contrasts and maintains quiet dynamics and a slow pace. The fantastic, oneiric mood created in it makes it considered one of the best pieces in Lutosławski’s oeuvre.
Six Songs of a Fairy Tale Princess by Szymanowski, was written in 1915 to texts by the composer’s sister, Zofia. Long, arabesque vocalizations of the solo voice create an unreal, fairy-tale and exotic atmosphere. The individual movements received the following titles: Lonely Moon, Nightingale, Golden Shoes, Dance, Song of the Wave and Feast. From among these miniatures, Szymanowski composed the first, second and fourth for voice and orchestra in 1933. The third, fifth and sixth have not been orchestrated until modern times – they were prepared by the Italian composer Bruno Dozza.

We will also listen to Sieben frühe Lieder, by Alban Berg and Symphonic Metamorphoses on the theme of Carl Maria von Weber by Paul Hindemith

Warsaw | Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra: Beethoven, Skoryk, Bacewicz i Haydn

On the 26th of March 2022 at 7 p.m. the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra conducted by Ukrainian Victoria Zhadko, first award winner at the Grzegorz Fitelberg conducting competition in Katowice will perform together with violinist Karolina Nowotczyńska, at the Fryderyk Chopin Music University Concert Hall.

The concert will begin with the composition We are, a paraphrase of the melody of the national anthem of Ukraine, Ще не вмерла України ні слава, ні воля (‘Ukraine has not yet died, nor her glory, nor her freedom’).
Myroslav Skoryk, born in 1938, was a prominent figure in Ukraine’s musical environment as a composer and musicologist, as well as an artistic director of the Kyiv Opera. His moving, romantic Melody in A minor became popular in a number of arrangements. It was also performed during the funeral ceremonies for the victims of the pro-European Maidan Uprising in 2013/2014, murdered by Russians and forces favourable to puppet leader Viktor Yanukovych.

Two cycles of six pieces, known as the London Symphonies (No. 93-104), provide a symphonic summary of Joseph Haydn’s work. Several of them contain musical “extravagances” and the jokes for which Haydn was famous. One of these appears in the next to last of the London Symphonies, No. 103. Symphony in E flat major, which begins with a mysterious “drumroll” on the timpani from which the piece received its well-known nickname.

This simple rhythm of timpani percussion is also featured at the beginning of one of Ludwig van Beethoven’s violin concertos; The solo part will be performed by Karolina Nowotczyńska, the concertmistress and Director of the Elbląg Chamber Orchestra. Nowotczyńska graduated with honours from the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk, where she studied under Prof. Krystyna Jurecka. The winner of many prestigious international competitions, she is an active performer (including as a chamber musician) and pedagogue.

Grażyna Bacewicz’s appealing Concerto for String Orchestra from 1948 with its three-part structure in the arrangement of the “fast-slow-fast” parts and an evolutionary motif refer to the Baroque era. Stefan Kisielewski wrote about it jokingly: ‘such a modern Brandenburg Concert.

There will be free tickets available for the refugees from Ukraine and their hosts who may help to spread this information as well as assist with reaching the concert.

Warsaw | Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra: Dvořák, Vanhal and Skoryk

The conductor of the Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra concert on the 9th of April 2022 at 7 p.m. in the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of the Polish Radio will be Wojciech Rajski, who in 2022 celebrates the 50th anniversary of his artistic work. The Hungarian double bass player Zsolt Fejérvári, the leader of the bass group at the Budapest Festival Orchestra and at the Orchester de la Suisse Romande, will be concert soloist.

The double bass is an instrument that is indispensable in the orchestra, as it creates the fondamento (the bass line in baroque scores) for the sounds of the string quintet. The instrument was rarely the centre of musical solos until the wide spectrum of its possibilities was recognised by the 19th century virtuosos. Original double bass concertos however were written even earlier by composers including Jan Křtitel Vaňhal (Johann Baptist Wanhal) His Concerto in E-flat major will be performed by the Hungarian artist.

Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 (1889) is a work filled with joy, optimism and references to national music, but remains devoid of an extra-musical narrative. Composed during a summer vacation in Vysoká u Příbramě, the work seems to reflect the bliss and the idyllic mood of time spent amidst the beauty of nature. Ouverture Carnival from the trilogy Nature, Life and Love of the Chech composer will also sound at the concert.

In the tragic days of war inflicted by Russia the concert will start with Ukraine’s national anthem, Ще не вмерла України ні слава, ні воля (“Ukraine has not yet died, nor her glory, nor her freedom”), the lyrics of which (written by Pavlo Chubynsky) are an intended reference to the incipit of Dąbrowski’s Mazurka. Melody in A minor of Myrosław Skoryk will also be performed this evening.
