Katowice | Sinfonia Iuventus at the Silesian Philharmonic

FS

The Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra will perform together with Szymon Klima under the baton of Yannis Pouspourikas on 6 March 2020 at 7.00 p.n. at the Silesian Philharmonic. The programme will include works by Sergei Prokofiev, Gerald Finzi and great Polish artists associated with Silesia.

A few years ago, clarinetist Szymon Klima became famous for an extraordinary project to “expand” the 10-minute cycle of appealing Dance Preludes (1954) by Witold Lutosławski, an improvisation inspired by this piece which resulted in concerts as well as the album Lutosławski Retuned (performed by a trio also featuring Adam Kowalewski and Piotr Wyleżoł). The March concert will feature these preludes in their original form and the artist will also perform the spectacularly expressive Clarinet Concerto (1949), the best-known work today by the somewhat forgotten, yet prolific British composer Gerald Finzi. The dance, quasi-folk idiom of Lutosławski’s Preludes will be completed by the lively third of the Dances op. 34, which Henryk Mikołaj Górecki composed in 1998 for the Rybnik Philharmonic.

Sergei Prokofiev, one of the pioneers of ambitious film music from the USSR, composed appealing music for the film Lieutenant Kijé, whose fame (in the form of a concert suite op. 60) considerably outlived the film itself. This colourful and attractive programme will be led by Yannis Pouspourikas – born in Marseilles, the conductor studied in Geneva and made his debut at the Opernhaus in Zurich; he has collaborated with, among others, the Glyndebourne festival, the Opéra National de Paris and many of the most important theatrical stages of France and Switzerland, as well as other countries. Particularly valued as an opera conductor, he has also appeared in many countries with great success in presenting symphonic repertoire.

Białystok | Paweł Mykietyn’s "Double Concerto"

Mykietyn

The Stanisław Moniuszko Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic – European Art Centre in Bialystok invites you on 6 March 2020 at 7:00 p.m. to the concert entitled "God's Voice", featuring works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Paweł Mykietyn.

“The Year 1812” Overture Tchaikovsky composed to be performed in the open air. To a big ensemble of brass, woodwinds and percussion, he added orchestra, toll of the bells, and sounds of the cannons – all to celebrate Russia’s great victory over Napoleon’s army in 1812. But there’s an American side to the work as well – the premiere directed by composer himself in 1891 took place at an opening concert of the Carnegie Hall in New York, and now it’s often performed for the Independence Day. Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2 both in structure and character resembles Tchaikovsky’s last symphonies, especially the Fifth, with whom it shares the E minor key. The Second brought Rachmaninov success and opened a new better chapter of life.

These two Russian works will be split by Mykietyn’s Double Concerto for two flutes and orchestra. This mellow, but at the same time very dramatic work is composed of three parts played attacca, the first and the last of them based on the composer’s own technique of continuous accelerando and ritardando. The well-known flute duo – Łukasz Długosz and Agata Kielar-Długosz will perform as soloists.

The concert is held under the patronage of the PWM Edition as part of the TUTTI.PL project promoting the performance of Polish music. The event is co-organized and co-financed under the "Conductor-in-Residence" programme of the Institute of Music and Dance.

Katowice | 90th anniversary of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice

NOSPR

A concert on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice will be held on 5 March 2020 at 07.30 p.m at the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall. The NPRSO under the baton of Lawrence Foster and world-famous artists Pinchas Zukerman and Amanda Forsyth will perform works composed by eminent artists.

The last part of Krzysztof Penderecki's "triptych" – De natura sonoris No. 3 – was written almost half a century after the composer's first attempt to explore the nature of sound in an orchestra, inspired by the epicurean poem of Lucretius. Penderecki no longer collects research material: he skillfully recapitulates the evolution of his style and technique.

Johannes Brahms created the Double Concerto, his last symphonic work, with the cellist friend Robert Hausmann and the former violinist friend Józef Joachim in mind. It was a gift for reconciliation wilth the latter, after the divorce of the violinist with Amalia Joachim, one of Brahms' closest associates. The gesture was appreciated: both virtuosos took part in the first performance.

The Concerto for orchestra is one of the last works by Bela Bartók: it is possible that the commission from Sergei Kusewicki prolonged the life of the ailing and underestimated Hungarian composer in exile. The reckoning with the past is a feature of all the late works of great artists – in this masterly yet accessible composition, Bartók combined native folk melodies, references to European impressionism and American traditional music.

Poznań | Gala Concert – Premiere of Zbigniew Kozub's "Te Deum"

AM Poznań

A gala concert to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Music Academy in Poznań will take place on 3 March 2020 at 8:00 p.m. in the Poznań Fara Basilica, premiering Zbigniew Kozub's Te Deum.

The university began operating in 1920 as the State Academy of Music and School, renamed in 1922 to the State Music Conservatory. The first director was the composer Henryk Opieński. The conservatory was not only a valued educational institution, but also an important center of Poznań's musical life. After the war, in October 1945, the university resumed its activity at its current headquarters at St. Marcin street, from 1947 functioning as the State College of Music, and from 1981 as the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music. The Poznań Academy is associated with outstanding artistic personalities: Walerian Bierdiajew, Stanisław Wisłocki, Raul Koczalski, Stanisław Szpinalski, Andrzej Koszewski, Tadeusz Szeligowski, Jadwiga Kaliszewska, and Edward Statkiewicz.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Academy, its authorities commissioned Te Deum for soprano, alto, tenor, reciter, mixed choir, organ and symphony orchestra from Prof. PhD Habil. Zbigniew Kozub. The work will be premiered by the ensembles of the Poznań Academy of Music, the Volantes Soania Choir of the Poznań University of Technology and the Dysonans Chamber Choir conducted by Jakub Chrenowicz in the Poznań Fara Basilica, using all the sound qualities of this magnificent Baroque temple. Marzena Michałowska (soprano), Małgorzata Woltmann-Żebrowska (alt), Tomasz Zagórski (tenor) and Adam Ferency (reciter) will perform as soloists. The organ part will be performed by Sławomir Kamiński on the famous Ladegast instrument.

Wrocław | String vs. Wind Instruments

NFM

On 3, 4 and 8 March 2020, the National Music Forum in Wrocław invites you to a series of concerts for young music lovers 'String versus wind instruments'. A battle of sounds, a fight of phrases. Struggles and performances of two groups of instruments: string and wind. Who will turn out to be the winner of this spectacular duel? Or maybe the strings and brass will "reconcile" musically and start playing harmoniously?

The repertoire of the series is a solid dose of music education based on valuable chamber music pieces. Both groups of instruments will be presented in an interesting and accessible way. Young listeners will learn about their construction, differences between them, their strengths and weaknesses. They will also learn what function these instruments perform in a symphony orchestra. As many as 10 performers – the largest ensemble without a conductor, so-called decet – will play together at the climactic moments. The most valuable information will be recorded using a multimedia glossary.

The programme was created from the passion of instrumental chamber music, the one that does not need a conductor, singers or dancers. We will listen to the works written by such composers as Georg Friedrich Händel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sergei Prokofiew and Grażyna Bacewicz.
