Toruń | Franciszek Woźniak In Memoriam

The Pomeranian Music Society invites you to the 38th Social Concert "Franciszek Woźniak In Memoriam", which will take place on the tenth anniversary of the composer's death, on 7 November 2019 at 5 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Music School Complex in Toruń.

Next to the compositions by Franciszek Woźniak – Three Miniatures (1956), Sonata (1956), Etude No. 11 from the cycle 12 Etudes for piano (1962-65), Word of Copernicus for mixed choir (1973), Symphony for percussion (1970) – the programme will feature works of his students: Sonatina for piano by Michał Zieliński, White Clouds, In my homeland to words by Czesław Miłosz for baritone and piano by Aleksandra Brejza, Sonata No. 7 for piano, part 3 by Marcin Kopczyński, Planetoid 14382 Woszczyk and Planetoid 1572 Posnania for trombone and percussion instruments by Magdalena Cynk, and Waiting for for piano and electronics by Sławomir Opaliński. The performers will be lecturers and students of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz and artists associated with the music school in Toruń.

Franciszek Woźniak (1932-2009) graduated from the State Higher School of Music in Poznań in the composition class of Tadeusz Szeligowski. He lectured at the State Higher School of Music in Gdańsk, and then in Bydgoszcz, where he organized the Composition and Theory of Music Department and the Vocal and Acting Department. In the years 1975-1981 he was the president of the Poznań Branch of the Polish Composers' Union, and in the years 1975-1990 he was a member of the Repertoire Committee of the Poznań Music Spring Festival. He was awarded, among others Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 1999 and the Medal of the Mayor of Bydgoszcz in 2005. He was the author of articles on music theory. His compositional output includes around 100 works – orchestral, chamber, solo, vocal and instrumental, choral and stage works. His compositions were performed at national and international festivals, and were also recorded by the Polish Radio.

Olsztyn | Stage for Polish Music

A concert inaugurating the "Stage for Polish Music" series in Olsztyn will take place on 7 November 2019 at 7.00 p.m. at the Warmian-Masurian Philharmonic, featuring Cuore Piano Trio. The event will be hosted by the director of the Institute of Music and Dance, Maxymilian Bylicki.

The Cuore Piano Trio was founded in 2017 on the initiative of students of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. Zuzanna Budzyńska (violin) studies in the class of Prof. Andrzej Gębski, Jadwiga Roguska (cello) – in the class of Prof. Tomasz Strahl and Mateusz Szmyt, while Szymon Ogryzek (piano) – in the class of Prof. Joanna Ławrynowicz-Just. As an ensemble, the musicians are trained in the chamber music class of Prof. Krystyna Makowska-Ławrynowicz. The trio has won several international chamber competitions, including in Singapore (2019), Athens and Bydgoszcz (2018). The Cuore Piano Trio participates in the programme of the Institute of Music and Dance "Stage for Polish Music", thanks to which in the 2019/2020 artistic season it will perform three recitals – at the National Philharmonic, Świętokrzyska Philharmonic and Warmian-Masurian Philharmonic.

The programme of the upcoming concert will include Three Polonaises, Op. 9 by Karol Lipiński arranged for violin and piano by Piotr Wróbel, as well as compositions by Franciszek Lessel – Trio in E major, Op. 5 for violin, cello and piano, Artur Malawski – Piano Trio, and Ludomir Różycki – Rhapsody, Op. 33 for piano, violin and cello.

Bydgoszcz | World premiere of Paderewski's songs

The world premiere of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski's songs arrangeed for soprano and string orchestra by Marcin Gumiela will take place on 6 November 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz on the 159th birth anniversary of the Master.

Paderewski's songs are characterized by "beautiful musical themes, a perfect sense of harmony with the text, as well as extremely diverse and colorful piano parts." Bydgoszcz audience will listen to the world premiere of Six Songs to words by Adam Mickiewicz, Op. 18 and Twelve songs to words by Catulle Mendès, Op. 22 in the arrangement by Bydgoszcz composer Marcin Gumiela. The soloist of the concert will be soprano Alina Adamski, a laureate of the 1st prize and seven special prizes (including one granted by the Pomeranian Philharmonic) at the 5th Ignacy Jan Paderewski Vocal Competition iin Bydgoszcz (2015). The Capella Bydgostiensis Chamber Orchestra will be conducted by Maciej Koczur, a recognized conductor of the young generation.

The concert is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the "Independent" Multiannual Programme for 2017-2022.

Kraków | A concert as part of the 14th Days of John Paul II

The world premiere of Adagio by Henry Jan Botor will take place on 5 November 2019 at 7 p.m. in Saints Peter and Paul Church during the concert as part of the 14th Days of John Paul II.

The days of John Paul II have permanently entered the calendar of artistic and scientific events organized in autumn in Krakow. This year's edition is particularly important because it anticipates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Holy Polish Pope. On this occasion, the Academy of Music in Krakow organises a unique concert with the participation of the Krakow choirs, the chamber orchestra and outstanding soloists: Kaja Danczowska (violin) and Jolanta Kowalska-Pawlikowska (soprano), under the direction of the Rector of the Krakow Academy of Music, Professor Stanisław Krawczyński.

The programe will include motets and hymnes by the British composer John Rutter, as well as the premiere of Adagio for violin, string orchestra and percussion by Henryk Jan Botor – composer and organist from Tychy, lecturer at the Academy of Music in Krakow. Admission free!

Poznań | Premiere of "Musica Posthumana"

The premiere performance of Musica Posthumana by Jakub Czerski, Przemysław Degórski, Marta Kaca and Jan Skorupa will take place on 5 November 2019 at 8 p.m.at the Zamek Culture Center in Poznań.

Musica Posthumana is a combination of concert, stage installation and choreography. The resulting sound environment combines instrumental and electronic music and sonifies body movement data. The spectacle uses, among others machine learning strategies and motion capture system.

The title refers to the Boetius of Dacia's theory of three spheres, which introduces the division of music into musica instrumentalis – music heard by man, musica humana – music of harmony of soul and body, and musica mundana – music of harmony of the Universe. The performance broadens this division by a fourth element – the title musica posthumana, in which the boundaries of the division proposed by Boetius blur, and the sound receives autonomous agency, enters into dynamic relations with other elements of the environment and empowers inanimate entities.

Musica Posthumana's performance is, according to the creators, an environment that functions on the basis of the relationship between sound, movement and technology. Their existence and continuous intertwining makes it difficult to talk about the elements of the spectacle as isolated, self-sufficient materials. Therefore, the perspective of entities functioning solely on the basis of interaction with each other becomes more favorable.

Kraków | Faces of Death – 2nd Edition: The Riddle of Immortality

The Academy of Music in Krakow invites you to the second edition of the "Faces of Death" series of meetings and concerts, which will take place on 4-6 November 2019. Admission free!

This year's series has been titled "Riddle of Immortality". The sense of our existence, immortality and the human soul will be the subject of consideration for the outstanding guests of discussion panels: dr Małgorzata Jantos – bioethicist / Jagiellonian University, dr hab. Lucyna Rotter, dr Katarzyna Góralczyk, dr Elżbieta Lisowska / Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, father Marek Donaj, moderator Dorota Imiełowska. Together with the audience they will talk about what awaits us when we cross the bridge of our lives.

"Faces of Death" are also concerts and exhibitions that will accompany discussion panels. A concert entitled Road to the North, which will take place on 6 November at 7.30 p.m. in the Florianka Auditorium, will premiere the work of the same title by Maciej Negrey as well as Transformations by Mateusz Bień and Margot by Dorota Imiełowska. The programme will also include the Polish premiere of Roman Ślazyk's Eight Flowers and works by Ernest Bloch, Paweł Sydor and Carl Nielsen. The special guest of the concert will be the Danish cellist Niels Ullner, professor of the Syddansk Musikkonservatorium in Odense, Denmark.

Szczecin | Festival Moniuszko Inspiration!

The "Moniuszko Inspiration!" Festival will take place at the Castle Opera in Szczecin on 3-10 November 2019. The work of "the father of Polish national opera" will be presented during seven different concerts, featuring, among others, Aleksandra Kurzak.

Is Moniuszko's music still relevant and inspirational for artists and audiences after 200 years? Is his work associated with something distant, hermetic and out of fashion? Festival "Moniuszko Inspiration!" tries to answer these questions. During seven festival events, an international group of artists will interpret Moniuszko's music in many distant styles: from folk music, through ballet and opera, to jazz. The concerts will feature enthisiastic amateur performers, rising opera stars, as well as world-renowned artists.

The first part of the inaugural "Polish Ballet Evening" will be filled with a masterfully orchestrated The Song of the Earth by Roman Palester in the extremely energetic choreography of the Italian artist Paolo Mangioli, placed in the space of the rainbow colors, white noise and pixelated photos. The second part is an innovative interpretation of Stanisław Moniuszko's In the Quarters, in which Robert Bondara, using modern dance language and contemporary staging means, universalizes the content of the original story to bring out timeless values and emphasize the stigma that war has on human life.

The world-famous opera singer Aleksandra Kurzak accompanied by pianist Marek Ruszczyńsk will give a special recital on 9 November, presenting renditions of Stanisław Moniuszko's songs. The Festival will close with the International Opera Gala "Moniuszko – Inspirations" with the participation of international and Polish singers, who, together with the Orchestra of the Opera at the Castle in Szczecin under the baton of artistic director Jerzy Wołosiuk, will invite the audience on a musical journey through Europe of Stanisław Moniuszko's time.

Nowy Sącz | 25th "Iubilaei Cantus" Music Festival

The 25th "Iubilaei Cantus" Music Festival – the event initiated in 1995 on the occasion of granting city rights to the city of Nowy Sącz on 8 November – will be held between 2 and 9 November 2019 in Nowy Sącz. Events related to the life and work of Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki, Piotr Skarga, Fryderyk Chopin and many others will find their place in the November celebrations.

The festival will be inaugurated on Friday 2 November at 4 p.m. by the "Night of sounds" – a musical venture on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Primary and Secondary Fryderyk Chopin State Music School in Nowy Sącz. During the evening, the audience will be able to decide for themselves what music they want to listen to at a given moment, because the concerts will take place in various spaces of the SOKÓŁ Lesser Poland Cultural Centre and in the Saint Casimir Church. The programme will include compositions by Fryderyk Chopin and Andrzej Cwojdziński.

The Thanksgiving Mass, written by Paweł Muzyka on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence, will be performed on 8 November at 7:15 p.m. in the Saint Margaret of Antioch Basicila. The premiere of the work took place on 11 November 2018 at the Temple of Divine Providence in Warsaw. The composition, according to the composer, "arose from the need of the heart and the desire to speak in sounds, as in words, on the side of values related to faith, which gave Poles the strength to fight for freedom and spiritual support." It will be performed by the Beethoven Academy Orchestra, the Górecki Choir Chamber and the Dominanta Choir of the Cracow University of Economics conducted by Tomasz Tokarczyk together with soloists: Katarzyna Oleś Blacha – soprano, Monika Korybalska – mezzo-soprano, Tomasz Krzysica – tenor, Robert Gierlach – bass, Ryszard Cieśla – actor. Production: Institute for the Promotion of Polish Culture in Krakow.

The Festival will also feature recitals of young piano duets, the 10th anniversary concert of the VERAICON Choir of the Sanctuary of the Transfiguration in Nowy Sącz with the guest participation of the CANTICUM IUBILAEUM Mixed Choir of the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows in Limanowa, as well as the improvised spiritual session Dziady performed by Piotr Orzechowski and High Definition Quartet. The concept of "Pianohooligan" is a unique attempt to interpret musically the second part of the Adam Mickiewicz's poetic drama. The concert is an unusual meeting of jazz with contemporary ambient, where the pathetic, romantic context gives way to dynamic illustration of the internal experiences of the characters from Mickiewicz's poem.

Warsaw | 6th International Ignacy Jan Paderewski Festival

The 6th edition of the International Ignacy Jan Paderewski Festival will be held on 2-10 November 2019 in Warsaw, including chamber and symphonic concerts, documentary film screenings and master classes.

The Festival will start on 2 November with a concert in the Ballroom of the Royal Castle. In the first part, Jekaterina and Stanisław Drzewiecki will perform piano compositions by Paderewski, Moszkowski and Brahms, while in the second part we will listen to opera arias performed by participants of the Opera Academy programme. The next day at the Witold Lutosławski Polish Radio Concert Studio Krzysztof Książek will give a piano recital and the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw conducted by Michał Kluza will perform, among others, Paderewski's Polish Fantasy in G sharp minor along with the English pianist and conductor Ian Hobson.

Young Winners of Music Competitions: Lelin Qi and Paweł Wojciechowski will perform on 6 November at the Warsaw Philharmonic Chamber Hall on the 159th anniversary of Paderewski's birth. An interactive concert for children aged 3-5 will be held on 9 November at 11 am in Royal Baths Park. The final symphony concert at the Witold Lutosławski Polish Radio Concert Studio will feature Szymon Nehring and the Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra under the baton of the already mentioned Ian Hobson. The programme will include Paderewski's Piano Concerto in A minor and Moszkowski's Suite d'Orchestre No.2.
