Gorzów | Third Time Lucky

Filharmonia Gorzowska

The Gorzów Philharmonic invites you on April 26, 2019 at 7.00 p.m. to a chamber concert featuring works for reed trio (d'anches).

The programme includes works for oboe, clarinet and bassoon which differ in terms of style, character and mood. Divertimento No. 3 KV 439b (c. 1783) comes from a set of 5 Divertimentos, which authorship, though completely unconfirmed, due to the elements typical of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's style, is attributed to the composer. Three-voice inventions (1722) by Johann Sebastian Bach are part of a collection of short works composed for a keyboard instrument, but we will listen to them in the arrangement for reed trio. The programme will be complemented by Cinq Pieces en Trio (1935) by French composer Jacques Ibert and Suite pour trio d'anches (1949) by Alexander Tansman.

Wrocław | The Triumph of Love

Markowicz

On April 25, 2019 at 7.00 p.m. at the National Forum of Music in Wrocław, members of the Lutosławski Quartet together with their guests will present works by Ernest Chausson, an artist sometimes called the precursor of the French impressionism, and Marcin Markowicz.

Marcin Markowicz is a concertmaster of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic and a founding member of the Lutosławski Quartet. He is not only an excellent chamber musician but also a composer writing solely for chamber ensembles. During the concert, we will listen to his String Quartet No. 1.

Ernest Chausson graduated from the Paris Conservatoire, where he studed under Jules Massenet and César Franck. In the fascinating output of this French composer, the most popular work is the atmospheric Poème for violin and orchestra. It was written in 1896, during the artist's holiday in a sunny Florence, and was commissioned by the famous Belgian violin virtuoso and composer, Eugène Ysaÿe. The author later transcribed it for a smaller ensemble, i. e. for violin and piano with string quartet. Chausson’s most often performed piece is a slightly younger Concerto in D major Op. 21, written in 1891. The premiere performance of this thoroughly virtuosic composition was also given by Ysaÿe, who decided to present the Concerto with his quartet and pianist Auguste Pierret. The key figure of the premiere was undoubtedly Pierret. He was the second piano virtuoso asked to perform the concerto – his predecessor resigned, considering his part to be too difficult.

Warsaw | Concert to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

Wajnberg

On 18 April 2019, on the eve of the 76th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra under the baton of Gabriel Chmura will perform at the POLIN Museum’s auditorium. They will pay tribute to the musicians from the Warsaw ghetto.

Lauren Zhang, a 16-year old laureate of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, will play the grand piano. The concert featuring pieces by Mozart, Schubert and Wajnberg is to commemorate the Jewish Symphony Orchestra and its exceptional soloist, Josima Feldschuh.

The Jewish Symphony Orchestra performed in the ghetto in the years 1941-1942. It consisted of Jewish musicians who before the war had been employed by the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Warsaw Opera or the Polish Radio Orchestra. At its peak, the Jewish Orchestra boasted ca eighty musicians. Among the conductors of symphony concerts were: Adam Furmański, Marian Neuteich, Szymon Pullman and Izrael Hammerman. On 15 March 1941, the Jewish Orchestra gave a concert featuring pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert. 11-year old pianist Josima Feldschuh was the soloist. Alas, despite the successful action of leading the girl out of the ghetto in 1943, she soon died of tuberculosis. Her notebook where she had used to jot down her compositions survived the war and today is part of the Yad Vashem Institute collection

In the second part of the concert we will listen to Chamber Symphony No. 4 by Mieczysław Wajnberg – the last piece he managed to complete before his passing in 1994. The symphony is a unique testament in which one can hear the echoes of Jewish music, the atrocities of war, the life in Stalinist Russia and the hope for the future.

Warsaw | The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross

POSI

The Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra under the direction of Paul Esswood will perform Haydn's The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross Hob. XX / 1A on Holy Wednesday, 17 April 2019, at 7.30 p.m. in the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw.

The Gospels convey seven sayings of Jesus uttered while he was dying on the Cross (commonly referred to as ‘the seven words’) – these messages, so significant for Christians, were often reflected upon by theologists and became a topic of homilies as well as musical compositions, mainly oratorios and cantatas. In 1786, Joseph Haydn received an extraordinary commission from Cádiz, a city in Andalusia located at the edge of the coast of Spain. A local clergyman, Don José Sáenz de Santa María, wanted an instrumental composition accompanying prayers and contemplation of ‘the Seven Words’ to be performed at Oratorio de la Santa Cueva in Cádiz on Good Friday the following year. The composer created a piece of art that was highly unconventional and unprecedented: Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze, including seven sonatas written for orchestra (all in slow tempos: adagio, largo, grave and lento) preceded by an introduction and finished with a lively finale, an illustration of an earthquake that followed the death of Christ.

Haydn’s work was a tremendous success – it was performed not only in Cádiz, but also in Vienna, Paris and Berlin. Deeply inspired by the success, the composer soon created a string quarter version (also popular to this day) and, ten years after composing the original, a choral version. During the April concert, the original version of Haydn’s masterpiece written for full orchestra will be performed under the legendary British conductor Paul Esswood.
