Warsaw | Symphony Concert "Independent - Created in Free Poland"

FNOn April 27, 2018 at 7.30 p.m. The Warsaw Philharmonic will host a symphony concert "Independent - Created in Free Poland". The programme will feature works of Polish and Russian composers.

The concert will start with Overture for symphony orchestra by Ignacy Jan Paderewski. As part of a Jubilee series of Polish works from the interwar period, the audience will hear the rarely performed Piano Concerto in D‑flat Major by Jerzy Gablenz – a composer and industrialist (an esteemed Kraków vinegar and mustard manufacturer), a monumental work of neo‑Romantic rapture. As a student of Władysław Żeleński and Feliks Nowowiejski, Gablenz had a solid music background, which gained him considerable recognition in his own lifetime, although he is mostly remembered thanks to his songs. The composer’s son, Tomasz, organised the world premiere of the Concerto in the Dominican Republic (1977, with Józef Stompel on piano), where he lives.

In 1925, Dmitri Shostakovich completed, his Symphony No. 1, on which he had worked for a long time with breaks, and a year later he managed to regain his place in the St. Petersburg Conservatory and submit the Symphony as his graduation project. Its value was acknowledged by his professors, who arranged for it to be performed in public on 10 May 1926 as part of a graduation students’ concert. The work was highly acclaimed, and its success was quickly confirmed in numerous performances abroad (a year after its premiere, it was met with an ovation in Berlin, under the baton of Bruno Walter himself). With this composition, the 19-year‑old genius embarked on a wonderful career as the leading symphony composer of the 20th century.

The concert is funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the NIEPODLEGŁA multi‑annual programme for 2017–2021 and is produced under the patronage of PWM Edition as part of the project TUTTI.pl promoting the performance of Polish music.

Tha 'Munnot Waste No Time (Let's not waste time, 1998) for two pianos and a clarinet is one of the few chamber pieces by Eugeniusz Knapik. The work, as described in the PWM catalog, is composer's ''personal, artistic farewell to the twentieth century. Tha' Munnot Waste No Time is the title of one of the chapters of a well-known and once popular (now re-emarging) book for children and young people, i.e. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. In the "Warsaw Autumn" festival programme book (1999) Knapik wrote: '' (...) The book, which is addressed to young readers, is about the timeless longings for Harmony, Beauty, Good and Friendship. Its basic premise is that these values are around us, and that often we are very close to them. Unfortunately, so often between the 'secret garden' and us (or maybe inside us), a wall springs up completely covering the object of our desires (...).''

Lodz | Symphony concert to celebrate Bulgarian Presidency in the European Union

FL

A symphonic concert on April 27, 2018 at the Artur Rubinstein Philharmonic will be an opportunity not only to listen to works that rarely appear in philharmonic repertoires (including one Lodz pre-premiere), but also to celebrate the Bulgarian Presidency in the European Union.

Ahead of us is the Lodz pre-premiere of Maurycy Moszkowski's Piano Concerto in B minor, discovered a few years ago. This German-Polish-Jewish pianist (born in 1854 in Wrocław) composed several hundred virtuoso pieces for the piano. They were appreciated and played by well-known soloists, including Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Apart from Moszkowski's Etude, the most frequently performed is the Piano Concerto in E major, as it was believed, the only one. It turned out, however, that there is another concerto written earlier. Along with the Lodz Philharmonics, it will be presented by Bulgarian artists – pianist Ludmil Angelov, an excellent interpreter of works by Fryderyk Chopin, and conductor Vladimir Kiradjiev.

During this concert, organized to celebrate the Bulgarian Presidency in the EU, the Bulgarian Suite by Pancho Vladigerova, related to the well-known Pasternak family, will also be performed The program of the concert will be completed by Polish melodies by Mieczysław Wajnberg, a Warsaw-born composer of Jewish origin, from 1939 residing in the USSR.

Pre-concert meeting at 6.15 p.m. will be lead by Piotr Matwiejczuk.
