Marcin Tadeusz Łukaszewski,

pianist, music theorist and composer, b. 20 November 1972 in Częstochowa, son of the composer Wojciech Łukaszewski. He graduated from State Secondary Music School in Częstochowa (1991) where he had learnt the piano with Prof. Zofia Miller and flute with Prof. Bogumiła Tęcza. He then studied piano with Prof. Bronisława Kawalla, Prof. Jan Ekier and Dr Edward Wolanin and chamber music with prof. Bogna Hałacz in the F. Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw (an honours degree in 1996). After his studies, he completed a two-year Postgraduate Study for Performers of Contemporary Music in Warsaw’s Music Academy (piano studies with Prof. Szabolcs Esztényi; a diploma with distinction in 1998), as well as a two-year Postgraduate Study in Music Theory at the Music Academy in Warsaw (a diploma with special distinction in 2000). In 1996-99, he held scholarships from the President of the City of Częstochowa, Association of Sacred Music Lovers, Foundation of Culture in Warsaw, and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.
As a composer, he remains an auto-didact, but he took lessons with Marian Borkowski, Marian Sawa and Paweł Łukaszewski.
He is the winner of the 1st prize in the National Solfège Competition in Katowice and 2nd prize in the F. Nowowiejski Competition for Composers in Warsaw for Prologue and Fugue for organ (1992). In 1993, he received the honorary bronze medal of the Polish Association of Choirs and Orchestras. In 2000, his record “Franciszek Lessel – Piano Works (Acte Préalable AP 0024, AP 0026) was nominated for the Fryderyk Award. In 2003, he won the Fryderyk Award of music record industry for his CD with piano works by Piotr Perkowski, as well as the “Mater Verbi” Award.
Since 1996 he has been an assistant lecturer in the Department of Religious Music Performance, Musicological Section of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, where he teaches piano workshops. He is also a music critic and journalist, member of the editorial board of the “Muzyka21” monthly, and author of the monograph of his father: Wojciech Łukaszewski – życie i twórczość [Wojciech Łukaszewski – Life and Works] (Częstochowa 1997).
He gives frequent concerts as a soloist and chamber musician. As a soloist, he has played several times with the Częstochowa Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Music Academy Symphony Orchestra in Warsaw, and "Camerata Vistula” Chamber Musicians’ Ensemble. He performed, among others, at the Composer Conference in the F. Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw, Warsaw Music Encounters, the Live Edition of F. Chopin’s Complete Works in Białystok and Warsaw, International Music Encounters “At the Source” in Krynica, and others. In his repertoire, he has numerous contemporary piano works by, among others, A. Berg, A. Schönberg, A. Webern, M. Sawa, M. Borkowski, T. Sikorski, K. Serocki, G. Bacewicz, J. Kornowicz. He has recorded several CDs with Polish 19th and 20th century music (incl. “Polish Contemporary Piano Music”, Acte Préalable 1999, AP 0016), “Franciszek Lessel – Piano Works" (Acte Préalable 1999, AP 0023, AP0026). He also wrote a book on the life and work of Wojciech Łukaszewski, published by the Teacher’s College of Higher Education (WSP) in Częstochowa in 1997. He writes music articles for ”Niedziela", „Częstochowa Cultural Fortnightly Aleje 3", „Vivo", „WSP Research Papers", „Inspirations", „Saeculum Christianum", and music commentaries for CDs released by the Warsaw-based company Acte Préalable. He is Secretary of the Board of the Association of Sacred Music Lovers. Since 1991, he has worked with the Choir of the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw as pianist-tutor. He has also composed music, incl. more than 20 works for choir, organ, piano and orchestra. His works were performed in Poland (at the International Festival of Sacred Music Gaude Mater in Częstochowa, Conversatorium of Organ Music in Legnica, and others) as well as abroad, e.g. in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and the United States.
