Andrzej Nikodemowicz,

composer, pianist and music teacher, b. 2nd January 1925 in Lwów (Lvov); d. 28 January 2017 in Lublin. In 1943-46 he studied chemistry at, among others, Lvov Polytechnic. Later he studied composition with Adam Sołtys (degree in 1950) and piano with Tadeusz Majerski (degree in 1954) at Lvov Conservatory. In 1951-73 he taught composition, music theory and piano playing at that conservatory. Since 1980 he has established permanent residence in Lublin, where he devotes himself to composition and teaching. In 1980-95 he taught theory and composition at the Institute of Artistic Education at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. He also taught at the Institute of Musicology of the Catholic University in Lublin. In 1982-92 he was choirmaster in the Higher Catholic Seminary. In 1995, he was granted the title of professor.
As a pianist, he played his own as well as classical compositions until his career was brought to an end by a hand illness.
Nikodemowicz won the 3rd prize in the All-Union Competition for Composers in Moscow (1961), the Blessed Friar Albert Award for his entire oeuvre (1981), President of the City of Lublin Award (1999), Award of the Polish Composers’ Union (2000), and the Minister of Culture and the National Heritage Award (2000). In 1998 he was also granted the Minister of Culture and Art Order "For Important Contributions to Polish Culture".
 In 1989 - 2017 Nikodemowicz was president of the Lublin branch of the Polish Composers’ Union.
