Barbara Krzyżaniak,
ethnomusicologist; b. 21st July 1924 in Szamotuły. In 1947-52 she studied musicology under A. Chybiński and M. Szczepańska at the University in Poznań. In 1971 she obtained a PhD for a thesis titled Rękopis z 1721 roku Biblioteki Uniwersytetu im. A. Mickiewicza w Poznaniu jako źródło do historii kolęd w Polsce w XVII i XVIII wieku (1721 Manuscript from the Library of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań as a Material for the Study of the History of Christmas Carols in 17th- and 18th-century Poland) written under the supervision of J. Chomiński at the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). She had worked with the Institute of Art's Poznań-based team for documenting folklore from 1951. In 1971-84 she conducted fieldwork in the regions of Wielkopolska, Łowicz, Kielce, Pałuki, Warmia, and Mazury. Between 1975 and 1977 she taught folklore at the Higher School of Pedagogy in Zielona Góra. Her academic interest circles around classification of folk songs, their ritual connotations, history of Christmas carols, and editing of source materials.
In 1979 she received the Golden Cross of Merit.
