Andrzej Dutkiewicz, composer and pianist, b. 30th September 1942 in Staszów. Studied piano with Jerzy Lefeld and Regina Smendzianka (master’s degree in 1968) as well as composition with Witold Rudziński (master’s degree in 1972) in the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw. In 1973-76, granted a Fulbright scholarship, he continued his composition studies with Samuel Adler and Wyne Barlow and piano studies with Eugene List in Eastman School of Music in Rochester in the USA, where he obtained the title of Doctor of Musical Arts. He participated in the International Courses of New Music in Darmstadt. As a pianist, he specialises in performing contemporary music. He has made concert tours in Europe, the United States, South America, Jamaica and Cuba. In 1970, Dutkiewicz won the 2nd prize in the International Competition for Performers of Contemporary Music in Rotterdam. In 1976-97 he taught master classes dedicated to the interpretation of contemporary music at the National Music Camp in Interlochen (USA), and in 1999-2000 - similar classes in Seoul and Taegu in South Korea. He has also given lectures combined with his own recitals in more than 50 American universities. He is the founder and leader of Group 20, an ensemble specialising in contemporary music performances. He has made numerous recordings on CD, as well as for the radio and television.
As a composer, he has received awards and honourable mentions in composer competitions, and his works have been performed at festivals in Poland and abroad. For his artistic activity outside Poland, he received a diploma in recognition of merit from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991).
At present, Andrzej Dutkiewicz is a nominated professor and artistic director of the Interdepartmental Study for the Interpretation of Contemporary Music in the Music Academy in Warsaw, where since 1999 he has also held the post of dean of studies in the Department of the Piano, Harpsichord and Organ.
