Katarzyna Tomala,

conductor; b. 17 November 1988 in Sieradz. She graduated in orchestral conducting from the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław (2013), where she studied with Mieczysław Gawroński. As a student in 2010 she founded the Infinito vocal ensemble comprising students and graduates of the Academy of Music in Wrocław. She developed her conducting skills during masterclasses taught by Tadeusz Strugała and was twice selected as one of the best participants (Wrocław 2011, Kraków 2012). She also participated in masterclasses conducted by Jin Wang, Jorma Panula, Mark Heron, Gabriel Chmura and Rafał Delekta (2013). In 2012 she obtained a scholarship of the President of Sieradz in recognition of her artistic achievements (part of the city’s Young Talent Support Programme). She reached the semi-finals of the Jeunesses Musicales International Conducting Competition in Bucharest (2013).

In 2013 Katarzyna Tomala won a competition for the post of assistant to Kristjan Järvi and was invited by the Baltic Youth Philharmonic to prepare one of the concerts of the Usedom Music Festival. Since 2014 she has also worked as an assistant conductor to Christian Vasquez, Diego Navarro, Christian Schumann, Erik Ochsner, Gabriel Chmura, Jacek Kaspszyk and Marek Moś. As a second conductor she rehearsed for the opening concert of the 18th Ada Sari International Vocal Artistry Competition in Nowy Sącz (performance of Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" by Gustav Mahler under the baton of the world-famous singer-conductor José Cura). During the 7th and 8th Krakow Film Music Festivals she worked with such eminent film composers as Hans Zimmer, Elliot Goldenthal, Dario Marinelli, Patrick Doyle, Trevor Morris, Daniel Licht, Jeff Beal, Ramin Djawadi and Jocelyn Pook.

In 2015 she was offered a function of a conductor at the Grand Theatre in Poznań. Thanks to the "Conductor-in-residence" programme initiated by the Institute of Music and Dance, in 2015-16 season she was the resident conductor of the Beethoven Academy Orchestra.

The artist has conducted such ensembles as the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, the Romanian Royal Camerata, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Chamber Ensemble in Cardiff, Royal Northern College of Music Chamber Ensemble in Manchester, National Forum of Music Symphony Orchestra in Wrocław, Beethoven Academy Orchestra, Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonietta Cracovia, Kalisz Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, Academic Symphony and Chamber Orchestras in Wrocław, Sound Factory Orchestra and the Misericordia Choir in Wrocław.
