Jan Oleszkowicz,

composer and music teacher, b. 30th September 1947 in Jelenia Góra. Having completed violin, piano and clarinet classes in the State Secondary Music School in Wrocław, he studied composition with Grażyna Bacewicz and Andrzej Dobrowolski in the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw (1966-71; an honours degree). In 1977-80 he continued his studies in the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and Ivo Malec and in Guy Reibel’s class of electroacoustic music. In 1978 he took part in master classes for composers taught by Iannis Xenakis in Aix-en-Provence in France. In 1981, he received training in computer music composition in IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique) in Paris.
Oleszkowicz has won numerous competitions for composers, incl. the Young Composers’ Competition of the Polish Composers’ Union - in 1972, 2nd prize for Concerto grosso for pop-rock group and symphony orchestra (1972); in 1984, award for his Thirteen Minutes of Fossilising for woodwind quintet (1984); in 1986, award for String Quartet No. 3 (1986); the 2nd International Kazimierz Serocki Competition for Composers (1987) – ZAiKS Authors’ Association Award and Zofia Serocka’s Award for Embryo for symphony orchestra (1986); Electro-acoustic Music Competition in Bourges (1990) – an honorable mention for Scontra for violin and tape (1990); International Music Days Competition in Warsaw (1991) – an award for Mr Elephant, a mini-opera for children; the Polish Radio Programme Two Competition (1996) for Appeal for 10 voices and 3 percussion groups (1995); competition for a mass in Katowice (1998) for Bogucka Mass for solo voices, choir and organ (1998).
Since 1971, Jan Oleszkowicz has worked in the Polish Radio and Polish Television and with the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio, in which he composed many of his pieces. Since 1982, he has taught piano improvisation in the Józef Elsner State Secondary Music School in Warsaw. In that school, he founded a computer music studio (1997), in which he now teaches classes. At seminars for music teachers, he lectured on modern methods of teaching improvisation by means of computers. For his achievements as music teacher (original teaching syllabuses) he received the Silver Cross of Merit in 1996.
Oleszkowicz is the author of, among others, the book I ty możesz improwizować [You Can Also Improvise], which won the award of the Centre for Artistic Education in Warsaw in 1997.
