Marcin Stańczyk,

composer and lawyer; b. 16th November 1977 in Łęczyca. In 2001 he graduated in law from the University of Łódź as well as in music theory (under Marta Szoka; 2006) and composition (MA and DMA under Zygmunt Krauze and Krzysztof Knittel; 2007) from the Academy of Music in Łódź. He completed a postgraduate course in composition at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Ivan Fedele (2008-2010), and a residence at Royaumont Foundation (2009; session Voix Nouvelles with Brian Ferneyhough, Isabel Mundry, Misato Mochizuki).

He has participated in several masterclasses, including 13th Young Composers Meeting in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands (2007; Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding, Richard Ares, Mary Finsterer, Joe Cutler), course with Klangforum Wien (2007) and Trilok Gurtu (2008) organized at La Biennale di Venezia, Bang a Can Summer Music Festival (2009; Steve Reich, David Lang, Michael Gordon), New Music Courses in Darmstadt (2010), Ovvero la fabbrica della creativita (2010 and 2012; Nuova Consonanza – Roma; Beat Furrer, Mark Andre), Jerwood Opera Writing Programme in Aldeburgh (2010-2011; Giorgio Battistelli). Between 2011 and 2014 he studied and worked at IRCAM in Paris, where he attended Cursus 1 and 2. He has participated in the young composers promotion programme of the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music (2007-2011).

He has received numerous scholarships in Poland (Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Association of Authors and Composers ZAiKS), Germany (International Music Institute Darmstadt), France (SACEM), England (Aldeburgh Music), and Italy (the Government).

Stańczyk’s music, described by Ivan Fedele in Il Giornale as "distortionism", has been featured at events in Poland and abroad, such as Gaudeamus Musik Week (SPIRIT in CAGE, composed for Orkest de Ereprijs), IRCAM Manifeste, Venice Biennale, MATA, Bang on a Can Marathon in New York, Espaces Sonores in Basel, Rondò in Milan, Review of Composers in Belgrade, "Warsaw Autumn", "Sacrum Profanum" in Krakow, "Musica Moderna" in Łódź and Festival of World Premieres in Katowice by renowned artists and ensembles such as Ensemble intercontemporain, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Oslo Sinfonietta, Ensemble Linea, E-Mex, Nikel, Algoritmo, Divertimento, Meitar, Sinfonia Varsovia, de ereprijs, Zone Expérimentale, Meitar, Divertimento, Sinfonia Varsovia and New Music Orchestra. In September 2012, the "Sacrum Profanum" Festival honoured him with a monographic concert performed by Bang on a Can All-Stars.

His works have been awarded at many international competitions such as the 3rd Sun River Student Composition Competition (2006) in Chengdu for Geysir – Grisey for 2 pianos, violin, alto and double bass (2nd prize), Laurenscatorij Foundation Composers Competition (2006) for Trois chant d’amour for 2 chamber choirs (1st prize), Grażyna Bacewicz International Composition Competition (2006) in Łódź for Afterimages for violin and piano (2nd prize; 1st was not awarded), 8th International Competition of Composition for Solo Instrument with or without Piano Accompaniment (2007) in Povoletto for Aspetto per pianoforte (1st prize), International Composition Contest "From Romanticism to Contemporary" (2008) in Bucarest for cycle Dialogues de Douve for voice and piano (3rd prize), Franco Donatoni International Composers Competition (2010) in Milan for Laterna for clarinet, cello, piano, percussion and electronics (1st prize), IRCAM Reading Panel, Staubach Honoraria (IMD Darmstadt), Salvatore Martirano Award (Illinois University) in 2011 for Nibiru for chamber orchestra (2nd prize), ISB David Walter Biennale, and the Tokyo Chamber Music Competition. In 2013, he won the prestigious Toru Takemitsu Composition Award in Tokyo and was nominated for the Koryfeusz Award bestowed by the Polish music community. In 2014 he was elected for a residency programme established by the City of Paris and Institut Français.

He works at the Administrative Court and as a choir singer at the Łódź Philharmonic. He also sang in chamber choirs Con Vigore, Alla camera, and All antico, with which he gave concerts in Poland and abroad. He also teaches contemporary composition techniques and the history of electronic music at the Academy of Music in Łódź, where he earner Doctor of Arts degree in 2013 and a habilitation in 2016.
