Andrzej Koszewski, composer, musicologist and academic teacher, b. 26th July, 1922 in Poznań; d. 17th February 2015, Poznań. In 1945 he began to study musicology with Adolf Chybiński at Poznań University (graduated in 1950). Simultaneously, in 1946-48, he studied music theory, and in 1948-53 – composition with Stefan Bolesław Poradowski at the State Higher School of Music in Poznań. In 1953-58 he continued his studies with Tadeusz Szeligowski as a doctoral student at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw.
Andrzej Koszewski began his teaching activity in 1948. In 1948-61 he taught at the State Secondary School of Music, in 1950-63 – at the Music College in Poznań. In 1957 he joined the faculty of the State Higher School of Music in Poznań – from 1965 he was an associate professor, in 1978 and 1985 he received the state titles of professor. From 1967 he taught a class of composition. In 1984-87 he also occupied the chair of composition and music theory at the Poznań Academy.
He has received numerous artistic awards, including the Minister of Culture and Arts Award, Second Class (1967, 1973 and 1977) and First Class (1978, 1982 and 1988), the Prime Minister's Award for works for children and young people (1982), the annual award of the Polish Composers' Union (1986) and the Jerzy Kurczewski Award (2003).
Andrzej Koszewski has contributed several musicological publications to the fields of Chopin studies and music ethnology. He also wrote Materiały do nauki improwizacji fortepianowej [Materials for the Study of Piano Improvisation], the first Polish handbook of this kind (State Higher School of Music in Poznań, 1968).
