composer; b. 24th November 1980 in Szczecin. In 2005 he graduated (with honours) from the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, having studied composition with Marek Jasiński and Zbigniew Bargielski. In 2008 he obtained a PhD at the Academy of Music in w Warsaw. He also studied in Italy (Instituto Achille Peri in Regio Emilia) under Andrea Talmelli and Maurizio Ferrari. He also participated in a range of master classes and seminars, held e.g. by the Polish Society for Contemporary Music, led by Anders Hillborg, Luca Francesconi, Marco Stroppa, Ivan Fedele, Horaţiu Rădulescu, David Dramm, Fabián Panisello, and Hugues Doufor.
Michał Dobrzyński was selected by Krzysztof Penderecki and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki to participate in the programme "Young Composers In Tribute to Chopin" organized in 2007-2010 by the European Krzysztof Penderecki Centre for Music.
He is an award-winning composer. In 2003 he received the 3rd prize (1st was not awarded) in the "instrumental and vocal works" category for Pax Omnes Gentes for mixed choir and symphony orchestra (2003) at the Composition Competition in Wrocław marking 25 years of John Paul II’s pontificate and 1st prize of the 8th Intercollegiate Fugue Competition, in 2004 – an honourable mention at the International Composition Competition celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz for Quartetto for string quartet (2002), in 2006 – 2nd prize (1st was not awarded) at the Ignacy Jan Paderewski International Composition Competition in Bydgoszcz for Pentagram for piano (2006). Michał Dobrzyński received scholarships from Minister of Culture and National Heritage of Poland in 2003/2004, 2004/2005, and in 2012. The latter allowed him to write Symfonia rzeźb dźwiękowych (Symphony of Sound Sculptures) for string orchestra and electronics.
In September 2012 DUX record label released his monographic album Expression (performers: Choir and Orchestra of the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice, Silesian Chamber Orchestra under Przemysław Fiugajski, and soloists, including Bartłomiej Nizioł). In 2008 the album Młodzi kompozytorzy w hołdzie Fryderykowi Chopinowi (Young Composers In Tribute to Chopin), released by DUX, featured Dobrzyński's Trio florenckie (Florence Trio) for violin, cello and piano. The album was nominated for the "Fryderk" award.
Michał Dobrzyński has collaborated with a number of professional ensembles, including Aukso, Kwadrofonik, Choir and Orchestra of the Silesian Philharmonic, Silesian Chamber Orchestra, Szczecin Philharmonic, Kalisz Philharmonic, Częstochowa Philharmonic, Schola Cantorum Posnaniensis, Baltic Neopolis Orchestra, Warsaw Chamber Opera, and excellent soloists and conductors such as Bartłomiej Nizioł, Mariusz Patyra, Urszula Kryger, Jerzy Salwarowski, Adam Klocek, Marek Moś, Przemysław Fiugajski, Jadwiga Gałęska-Tritt, Natalia Sawościanik, Magdalena Lisak, Piotr Żukowski, Isabelle Cottet, or Yuko Mine.
His compositions were performed at festivals in Poland and abroad: "Warsaw Autumn" Festival (concerts of the Youth Circle), Festival of World Premieres in Katowice, Poznań Music Spiring, Sopot Classic, Sacrum non Profanum, Zamość Days of Music, Festival of Prize-Winners of Music Competitions in Bydgoszcz, Compositori a Confronto in Italy, and numerous concerts in Poland, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Czech Republic, and China.
Dobrzyński's works are included in PWM Edition catalogue. In January 2013 PWM published two pieces, which have also been featured on Dobrzyński's monographic album produced by DUX: Iluminacje. Concerto-notturno (Illuminations. Concerto-notturno; 2010) for piano and string orchestra and Elegia I (Elegy No. 1; 2006) for violin solo.
He is a member of the Youth Circle of the Polish Composers' Union (sitting on its board in 2008-10).
He teaches at the Faculty of Composition, Theory of Music and Sound Engineering at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz and leads the Academy's Studio of Contemporary Music.
