composer and music theorist; b. 24 April 1974 in Gliwice. He graduated from the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice in theory of music (1998) and composition under Józef Świder (2000). In 2006 he obtained a PhD (thesis Genus Computationis - Koncert skrzypcowy/Genus Computationis - String Concerto) prepared under the supervision of Eugeniusz Knapik. The piece he based his PhD thesis was performed for the first time in 2010 at the Musica Polonica Nova Festival in Wrocław by Szymon Krzeszowiec and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.
In his artistic work he focuses on electronic music. He participated in a range of composition workshops, e.g. a course led by Krzysztof Knittel and Elżbieta Sikora (Gdańsk, 2001), as well as academic conferences and concerts of electronic music. Recently he has also been active as an improviser. He performed with Mattias Mainz (quartertone trumpet) at the Media and Tradition (Media and Tradycja) International Workshops held in Cieszyn (2005), Katowice, and Cologne (2006), as well as with Richard Ortmann (saxophone) as part of Soundcheck (Katowice 2006) and C.O.A.L. – Carboniferous to Open-eyed Artists on Landscape (Katowice 2007, Dortmund 2008). As an improviser he also performed at the Jazz Festival of Improvised Music (2005) with Piotr Domagała and Piotr Toruński (bass clarinet), with the Haagsche Hofmuzieck Orchestra during _brandenburg_320, a project held in the GUIDO historical mine in Zabrze (2006). In 2008 he performed together with jazz quintet playing Krzysztof Komeda's film music as part of the project Nóż w wodzie (Knife in the Water).
In 2007 he established the improvising duo Loadbang Ensemble with Krzysztof Wołek. The ensemble performed at such festivals as Audio-Art, Festival of New Music in Bytom (2008), New Music Festival in Louisville (2009, featuring Alison Ogden and John Ritz), Musica Moderna in Łódź (2011), 1st International Festival of Electronic Music in Tbilisi (2012), and 2nd Brand New Music Festival in Katowice (2012, featuring flutist Hong-Da Chin). The artist’s works have been performed at such festivals as "Warsaw Autumn", Festival of New Music in Katowice, Musica Polonica Nova, Musica Electronica Nova, Alkagran Autumn Music Festival in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Silesian Rostrums of Composers, Musica Moderna in Łódź, Festival of World Premieres in Katowice, New Music Festival in Louisville, and 1st International Festival of Electronic Music in Tbilisi.
Mamczarski's score for Tomasz Jurkiewicz’s film miniature Franciszek won the audience award at the Etiuda&Anima International Festival in Kraków (2005), Grand Prix at the FeFe Felliniada Film Festival in Warsaw (2006) and the "Brązowa Framuga" Award of the Drzwi (Door) Film Festival (2007). He also wrote music to the film Czarne serca. Kopalnia Wujek 16 grudnia 1981 r. [The Black Hearts. The "Wujek" Mine on 16 December 1981] (2006), Barbara Kasperczak's experimental film Podróż [Journey] (2007), and the soundtrack and score for Agata Stebnicka's Lost in Katowice (2011). In 2012 he wrote music for the Silesian Theatre's production of Sławomir Mrożek's play Contract.
Apart from composition, Jarosław Mamczarski engages in several projects (concerts, recording sessions) as a sound engineer. He has been collaborating with the New Music Orchestra since it was established. In 2009 he developed the electronic material for Fausto Romitelli's opera Index of metals (e.g. at Musica Electronica Nova Festival) and Muzyka lustrzana (Mirror Music) by Stanisław Bromboszcz (3rd Festival of World Premieres in Katowice). In 2013 he run the electronic layer in such pieces as Inspiracje (Inspirations) by Ernst Małek (performed at a concert marking the 40th anniversary of the Silesian Rostrum of Composers), Arietta e and fiori by Włodzimierz Kotoński (5th Festival of World Premieres in Katowice), Organ Concerto by Stanisław Moryto and Cello Concerto No. 2 by Weronika Ratusińska-Zamuszko.
As an active organiser of cultural events he was a member of the programming councils of the Musica Electronica Nova (2009) and Brand New Music Festival (2010, 2012), co-organiser of the Festival of New Music (2007, 2008) and concerts held as part of the Silesian Rostrums of Composers (2011, 2013) and the Silesian Days of Contemporary Music (2012, 2014). He coordinated streaming of an Internet concert (Katowice - Dortmund - Lille) held as part of the C.O.A.L. project. He also coordinated the event "Guck mal! Schlesien" in Düsseldorf (2010).
In 1998 he joined the academic staff of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. He leads the Studio of Electroacoustic Music, organises concerts and conferences, e.g. Styl Późny (Late Style) in 2000 and 2004, and Musica Inter Artes in 2009. Since 2010 he has been supervising financial reports on behalf of the rector, and in 2012 he was given a function of a deputy dean of the Faculty of Composition, Interpretation, Education and Jazz. He revises and supervises BA and MA theses.
He is a founding member of the Polish Society for Electroacoustic Music (since 2005), regular member of the Polish Composers' Union (since 2008), and the Inter-university Department of Ear Training of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw (since 2010). In 2010 he was appointed deputy chairman of the Katowice section of the Polish Composers' Union.
