composer, conductor and organiser of cultural events; b. 14th May 1930 in Sadlno; d. 5th September 2024 in Warsaw. He studied musicology under Adolf Chybiński at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in 1949-51. In 1950-54 he studied composition under Tadeusz Szeligowski, and in 1951-55 conducting with Walerian Bierdiajew and Stanisław Wisłocki at the State Higher School of Music in Poznań.
Between 1954 and 1964 Władysław Słowiński was a conductor of the Poznań Opera House, but worked also with a range of symphony orchestras, mainly the Poznań Philharmonics. Later, he also collaborated with the Grand Theatre in Łódź and Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera. In 1970-73 he was the artistic director of the Polskie Nagrania record company. From 1973 to 1985 he served as the general secretary of the Polish Composers' Union (ZKP), and from 1985 to 2001 he was the president of ZKP's Warsaw Section. In 1986 he founded Warsaw Music Encounters and acted as the festival’s artistic director till 2016, then the festival's honorary director.
Composer has reconstructed and instrumented the lost score of Władysław Żeleński's opera Stara baśń [An Ancient Tale] (1959).
Władysław Słowiński's compositions were released on the following albums: Works for String Quartet (Acte Préalable, 2000), Chamber Works (Acte Préalable, 2000), Laks. Słowiński. Pstrokońska-Nawratil (DUX, 2012).
His artistic and organisational efforts have been awarded with a range of distinctions, incluidng: the Golden Cross of Merit (1975), the Prime Minister's Award for artistic creation for children and the youth (1977), the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1980), the Golden Honorary Award "For Merit to Warsaw" (1986), the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1987), Life Achievement Award from the governor of the Warsaw province (1990), the Annual ZKP Award for composing work, founding the Warsaw Music Encounters and merit to the ZKP (1999), award from the Marshal of the Mazowieckie Province for composing work and social involvement (2001), Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2005), Silver Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture and the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Award from the local authorities of the Mazowieckie province (2006), the Polish Society of Authors and Composers (ZAiKS) Centenary Award (2019).
