composer; b. 15th January 1982 in Legnica. She studied history of art, philosophy, music theory and composition in Wrocław (with Krystian Kiełb and Cezary Duchnowski), and later composition with Beat Furrer (Graz and Frankfurt am Main), Pierluigi Billone (Graz), Gerhard Müller-Hornbach and Wolfgang Rihm (Karlsruhe). She attended several masterclasses run by Helmut Lachenmann, Mark Andre, Georg Friedrich Haas, Vinko Globokar, Mauricio Sotelo, Tristan Murail, and many others.

She received scholarships from the DAAD, Oscar und Vera Ritter Stiftung, Hoepfner Stiftung (Wolfgang-Rihm-Stipendium), ÖAAD, the City of Wrocław, Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and Kunststiftung Baden–Württemberg, as well as a residency at La Muse en Circuit in France (2012). She was a composer-in-residence at ZKM Karlsruhe, she also won the Staubach Honorarium and the Stipend Prize of the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt (2012). In 2016 she is the artist-in-residence at Villa Serpentara (with funds granted by the Akademie der Künste Berlin).

Jagoda Szmytka’s music has been performed at "Warsaw Autumn" Festival, "Codes" Festival in Lublin, Musica Polonica Nova and Musica Electronica Nova in Wrocław, Eclat New Music Festival in Stuttgart, International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, Ultraschall in Berlin, Wien Modern, German Radio in Cologne, Lucerne Festival, Akademie der Künste in Berlin, Royaumont, Acanthes in Metz, ENSEMS in Valencia, Donaueschinger Musiktage (Off-Programm), Ohren auf Europa in Düsseldorf, Musica Moderna in Łódź, Tokyo Experimental Festival, Audio Art in Krakow, Mediascapes in Graz, International Rostrum for Electro-Acoustic Music in Lisbon and the National Opera in Warsaw. She has collaborated with Ensemble Interface, Ensemble Garage, ensemble recherche, ensemble mosaik, Ensemble L’Arsenale, European Workshop for Contemporary Music, the duo leise dröhnung, MAM.Manufaktur für Aktuelle Musik, and Kwartludium.

In 2015 rok Edition Zeitgenössische Musik/WERGO released her monograph album Bloody Cherries.

Jagoda Szmytka is the founder and leader of PLAY– Platform for Art and Culture Initiatives in Frankfurt.

In 2016 she was awarded the German Music Authors’ Prize.

She was a member of Polish Composers’ Union's Youth Circle.

She works and lives in Karlsruhe.
