In the Great Synagogue in Tykocin on the 22nd of October, 2023 at 6 p.m. there will be a unique, premiere concert of works by Mieczysław Wajnberg, Johann Sebastian Bach and Andrzej Panufnik. Their masterpieces will be performed by the violinist Maria Sławek, Lutosławski Quartet and double bass player Tomasz Januchta.
Where does this connection come from? Weinberg and Panufnik studied together at the Warsaw Conservatory before the outbreak of World War II. Weinberg was also one of the artists who premiered Panufnik's Piano Trio. The separation of their works with Ciaccona from Bach's Partita No. 2 in D minor is not accidental - this work was extremely important to both of them, and Ciaccona appears in Weinberg's greatest and most famous work, the opera The Passenger.
World War II completely changed the course of both their lives - Weinberg fled to the East, Panufnik to the West. They did not return to Poland physically, but a keen ear will notice that they returned to it many times in their works.
The concert in Tykocin will be recorded and released as a CD and LP by the Orphée Classics label.
