The 10th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors will begin in Katowice on November 17, 2017.
The Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors is one of Poland's premier conducting competitions, which was admitted as a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions based in Geneva in 1980. It was founded in 1979 by Karol Stryja, student of Grzegorz Fitelberg, who led all its editions until his death in 1998. The repertoire covers a range of music styles, including Viennese Classicism, Romanticism and 20th-century classical music.
50 young conductors from 21 countries will fight for the Golden Baton in 2017 edition. They will present their talents by conducting 100 musicians form the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra along with soloists such as Piotr Pławner, Jakub Jakowicz, Tomasz Strahl, Marcin Zdunik and Piotr Sałajczyk. This year’s total prizes pool is 82 000 euro. The competition will last until November 26, 2017.
The programme of the inaugural concert on November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Silesian Philharmonic will include works of Polish composers: Przystępuję do ciebie by Eugeniusz Knapik and Symphony No. 2 Copernican by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. The concert of laureats of the conpetition will take place on November 27 at the Warsaw Philharmonic.
