We regret to inform that on May 5, 2018 in Gdańsk died dr hab. Eugeniusz Głowski, composer and theoretician, an excellent teacher at the Music Academy in Gdańsk and Bydgoszcz, a member of the Polish Composers' Union since 1977.
He graduated in music theory and composition at the State Higher School of Music in Gdańsk (1967, 1971) under direction of Konrad Pałubicki and Marek Podhajski. He was a laureate of many awards and distinctions at composition competitions, including Feliks Nowowiejski (1973), Józef Elsner (1975), Polish Radio (1977), Polish Episcopate (1984), Karol Lipiński (1990), Tola Korian (London, 1990), and the Second Christmas Carols Composition Competition (Będzin, 2005). His works have been performed at many festivals, competitions and concerts in Poland and in Europe, as well as in the United States, Chile and Peru (including in Arezzo, Arhn, Brno, Brussels, Hamburg, Helgoland, Kalundborg, Kiev, Lucerne, Mannheim, Moscow , Minsk, Neuchâtel, Oskarshamn, Paris, Santiago, Varna, Weimar, Vienna).
He was an ordinary member of the Polish Composers' Union and ZAiKS Authors' Association. In the years 1978-96 he was the president, vice president and secretary of the board of the Gdańsk branch of the Polish Composers' Union. In 1968-2013, Eugeniusz Głowski lectured at the Music Academy in Gdańsk. He was the dean of the Faculty of Composition and Theory of Music (1981-87), director of the Institute of Music Theory (1987-88), head of the Department of Composition (1980-2005). He also worked at the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz (1980-2005). While leading the composition class, he has educated over a dozen laureates of international composition competitions.
Eugeniusz Głowski was honored with many distinctions, including Silver Cross of Merit (1979), Golden Cross of Merit (1985), Award of the Minister of Culture and Art (1975, 1980, 1985, 1991), Honorary Badge "Meritorious Activist of Culture" (1983), Award of the Gdańsk Society of Friends of Art (1987), Medal of the Commission of National Education (2001). In 2011, he received the President of the City of Gdańsk Award in the field of culture.
