The "Crossroads" Centre for Intercultural Creative Initiatives in Lublin invites you to the 12th edition of "Codes" Festival of Traditional and Avant-garde Music which will run from 2 to 5 September 2020. Its formula is based on the idea of finding common issues and determining similarities between distant cultural phenomena.
The yearly event confronts the latest music pursuits with the still vivid archaic musical forms. Old music is re-discovered in unexpected present-day contexts and avant-garde experimental artists listen intently to the voices of the past. This year's inaugural concert will premiere Zygmunt Krauze's Copernicus – Our Planet and Jerzy Kornowicz's Phantoms, both commissioned by the "Codes" Festival. Zygmunt Krauze's piece deals with the topic of global threats to the climate and destructive human activities, referring to the texts of Nicolaus Copernicus and Greta Thunberg. The composition will be performed by the proMODERN vocal sextet, specializing in the interpretation of contemporary music. During the concert in Lublin, the ensemble will be accompanied by the Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra conducted by Marek Wroniszewski. The piece was written as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme operated by the Institute of Music and Dance
The Festival will also premiere a new version of the opera Anonymous by Rafał Ryterski, as well as The Shining by Szabolcs Esztényi, Hubert Zemler and Ryszard Latecki, and the Devil's fiddle – L'opera del villaggio by Cezary Duchnowski and Maciej Filipczuk, created as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme. The last night at the Festival Club will feature the Golden Branch / Masked Ball organised by groups of the Workshops of Local Culture.
For the first time, the audience will be able to participate in the Festival both live (limited number of seats, free admission) as well as online. All concerts will be broadcast live on the website: https://kody-festiwal.pl/en
