How to hear yourself in new music, and where to experience Polish world premieres in June? Here’s the answer:
On June 15, 2025, at 6:00 PM, we will immerse ourselves in the sounds of the latest works by Nikolet Burzyńska, Monika Szpyrka, Raven Chacon, and Cristian Lolea. The Orchestra of New Music will perform under the baton of Szymon Bywalec during the concert titled “Borders of Cultural Identity” at the NOSPR headquarters.
References to Renaissance and Baroque music can be heard in Comme un soupir étouffé by Monika Szpyrka, which may serve as a metaphor for human community.
Nikolet Burzyńska created in her composition Unconcerted a sonic image of a “world without a center, where voices exist alongside each other, aware of one another but not bound by compulsion.”
The story of searching for oneself—not in a dreamed-of or ideal community, but a very real one—and culture is presented in the new work by Cristian Lolea. The Romanian composer, who has lived by the Vistula River for decades, wrote about his Polaroid:
“This will be not only a musical piece but a journey through my own experiences and relationships with Polish music and culture.”
The harrowing theme of genocide is reflected in American Ledger No. 1 by Raven Chacon, a representative of the Navajo people. Each sound in the score hides an episode of the tragic history of the United States.
The works of Nikolet Burzyńska, Monika Szpyrka, and Cristian Lolea were co-funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund under the “Composer Commissions” program, carried out by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
