The Silesian Quartet and pianist Paweł Wakarecy will present works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Witold Szalonek on 29 May 2021 at 6.00 p.m. as part of the "Mozart among the giants" concert series at the seat of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
In 1782, Mozart was keen to create new rituals. His Viennese career was blossoming: not only was he successful as a composer, but as a virtuoso as well. KV 413 is the first of the piano concertos he wrote with his own subscription performances in Vienna in mind. Anticipating the popularity of the piece, he also prepared an a quattro version, intended ‘for home use’, himself.
Szalonek’s Symphony of Rituals might initially remind one of a rehearsal by a quartet of the aforementioned type. This late work of Szalonek’s, however, is a sum of all musical rituals – beginning with tuning of the instruments, through interpretation of the creative concept, to the final ‘dance’ which will find its form in the listener’s imagination. Music does not tolerate routine, yet rituals are necessary.
