Warsaw | 1. Timeless Film Festival Warsaw: "Phantom Carriage" of Sjöström and organ music
Media patronage: Polish Music Information Centre POLMIC
On the 9th of April 9, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the 1st Timeless Film Festival Warsaw, we will watch the Swedish silent film The Phantom Carriage by Victor Sjöström at the Warsaw Philharmonic and hear Ellen Arkbro's composition for organ, prepared especially for the festival. This is the first opportunity in several decades to watch a silent horror film with live organ music in Warsaw.
The director himself played the main role in the film; he also used experiments with image and light - the then-discovered special effects and multiple exposures: recorded figures, ghosts and specters overlap in the same space.
This evocative morality play about redemption and mercy inspired Swedish composer and organist Ellen Arkbro, who created her own musical interpretation of the 1921 metaphysical horror.
