Patkowski. Music Ambassador from Mars

Patkowski

A book by culture expert Agnieszka Pindera, Patkowski. Music Ambassador from Mars, has been published by the Art Museum in Łódź and the Automatophone Foundation.

It is the second publication in the series Biblioteka SEPR (PRES Library) promoting the legacy of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio which, for many years, has been focusing a great deal of interests and research efforts of the team of the Art Museum and Bôłt Records curators. A selection of texts titled Black Room and Other Rooms was published a year ago, giving a more in-depth insight into how the relationships between the Experimental Studio and composers evolved and describing interdisciplinary projects, in which the Studio was engaged.

Agnieszka Pindera, the author of the second publication, tells the story of Józef Patkowski, a musicologist, the founder and a long serving manager of the Studio. The collected material shows that Patkowski can be considered one of the first curators of contemporary art in Poland, a dedicated supervisor of projects on the border of new media, performance and installations. The Music Ambassador from Mars is therefore not only a biography of Józef Patkowski, but also a report on the development of a new interdisciplinary profession of curator, which became popular with the arrival of the 21st century and went beyond the walls of museums and galleries of contemporary art.

The Art Museum in Lodz is also one of the publishers of the first publication devoted to the Experimental Studio in English: Ultra Sounds. The Sonic Art of Polish Radio Experimental Studio (2019), edited by David Crowley. The book is a result of the PRES conference, which the museum co-organized with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in 2017.
