A series of three online concerts by Marcin Masecki and Barbara Kinga Majewska, which will start on 29 November 2020 at 6.00 p.m., presents outstanding works of European music literature in unexpected, sometimes risky but always justified contexts.
The performers treat music not only as a source of sensual pleasure, but also as an intellectual task. The method here is to study the relationship between music and geography, architecture, and the history of war tactics. Taking the scores as a starting point, Majewska and Masecki find something very modern in classical works: a record of the world knocked off balanace, in a process of continuous transformation. The Protestant chant easily turns into a song that is lost in recitation, and the polyphonic madrigal becomes a monody with an operatic narrative.
The programme of the artists' duo will include Polish music: Ignacy Kossobudzki's Temu tylko pług a socha to words by Maria Konopnicka, Jadwiga Sarnecka's Tenebrae and Lux in Tenebris, Karol Szymanowski's Three Soldier's Songs, Stanisław Moniuszko's Benedictus from the collection Masses and Church Songs and Departure for War to words by Jan Czeczot.
