Tłokowo | CLANGOR – Jeziorany Chamber Music Concerts

Klangor The last weekend of August will provide us with the opportunity to experience the beauty of live chamber music, while being surrounded by picturesque local landscapes and historic architecture of the Polish region Warmia. Cellist and music arranger Michał Pepol (born in Olsztyn, Poland), artistic curator of the Clangor – Jeziorany Chamber Music Concerts festival invites prominent Polish musicians: pianist Bartek Wąsik, violinist Izabella Szałaj-Zimak and clarinetist Andrzej Ciepliński to once again collaborate with him on stage during this remarkable musical event.

The concerts will be held on 27-29 August 2021, each day at 7.30 p.m., in the St. Roch Church between Tłokowo and Kramarzewo. There is an intentional association between the festival’s date and its title – Clangor is a word which refers to the cranes’ calls, and the end of August is the usual time in Poland for these birds to gather before they leave for winter. The bird calls’ motif will also appear in the musical works presented at the festival.

Clangor, a three-day event, will celebrate its opening with Michał Pepol’s concert Vox Cellestis. This intriguing title actually refers to a one-hour concert of cello solo music, mixed with electronic sounds, which includes pieces by such composers as Olivier Messiaen, Steve Reich, Paweł Mykietyn and Arvo Pärt. On the second day of the event the guests will have the chance to listen to Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the end of time, performed by Michał Pepol (cello), Bartek Wąsik (piano), Izabella Szałaj-Zimak (violin) and Andrzej Ciepliński (clarinet). The eight-movement quartet was written in the concentration camp in Görlitz (presently Zgorzelec), where the composer was imprisoned since 1940. The last festival evening will belong to pianist Bartek Wąsik, who will be performing his own piece Pianokrąg (Pianocircle) – an hour-long composition inspired by the sounds of Polish nature. Pianokrąg is a sort of musical tribute to nature, and – undoubtedly – a perfect culmination for the first edition of the festival, as its very last sounds are accompanied by the crane clangor recorded by the pianist himself while wandering through the meadows of Warmia.

The festival is organised by the Municipal Cultural Center in Jeziorany, Poland. The event is co-financed by the Polish Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport as part of the National Center for Culture’s program "Culture – Interventions 2021".
