Witold Szalonek at music academies on the 20th anniversary of his death

SzalonekConcerts in memory of Witold Szalonek on the 20th anniversary of his death will take place at three music academies in Poland: on 26 October 2021 at 7.00 p.m. at the I.J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, on 27 October at 7.00 p.m. at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław and on 4 November at 7.00 p.m. at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.

Witold Szalonek (1927–2001) – like Wojciech Kilar and Romuald Twardowski – graduated from the State Higher School of Music in Katowice, where he studied composition with Bolesław Woytowicz. He was the discoverer of "combined sounds" – multi-sounds of a specific colour, possible to obtain on woodwind instruments. His works have been performed at many festivals of contemporary music, including the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, the World Music Days of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) or "Warsaw Autumn".

The Silesian Quartet and Michał Górczyński (bass clarinet), who will take part in this unique Witold Szalonek memorial project, will perform his chamber compositions – they perfectly reflect the most important features of the musical language of this composer and brave experimenter.

The concert is organized in collaboration with the Musica Mundana Foundation and PWM Edition. Co-financed by the Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the "Music" programme carried out by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
